I met an ex-Lightning owner today, he traded his 1999 in on a 2001 Cobra Convertible. So he says: "It's a lot quicker than the L ever was, and it handles a lot better."

And I ask him how good does it run. He produces a time slip with a 13.801 @ 104.2 mph.

I had my hood open to cool down, and he was saying I should get an air filter, but he will still be quicker. So I open the center console and take out my signature run's time slip. He didn't speak to me again for the rest of the auto-X meeting.

On the auto-X, he did beat me by 0.7 of a second, but he is in a different class...

Sorry to inform the new Cobra owner, that an assometer is not the way to tell which vehicle is quicker. When I drive my LT1 Vette it feels way quicker than my L and then when I get back in the L, I think to myself this thing is really slow. But at the track the L (chipped and filtered) is
.1-.2 seconds quicker.

 

In the words of good ole Rodney King "Can't we all just get along!" It's a lot easier to just grab whatever keys make you happy that day!

I love both the Lightning and the Cobra, but I'd like to point out that the Cobra ran 3.5 MPH faster than the Lightning which is pretty substantial. With a better driver that Cobra would smoke that particular Lightning.

I agree with bfb the 98 Cobra will outrun the 99 & 00 Lightnings stock for stock. The 01 Lightning will probably take the 96-99 Cobra though. The 99 Cobras were slower than the 96-98's in my opinion and the Lightning might be able to win stock for stock. But I'm hearing great things about the 01 Cobra they are very fast and I believe with a good driver they will outrun the stock Lightning. None of this really matters because who leaves their SVT stock? LOL

The point is that this particular Cobra is faster than this particular Lightning if it had a good driver. As far as I'm concerned the Cobra and the Lightning are brothers and we should be more worried about spanking everything else on the road. Whether I choose the 02 Cobra or the 02 Lightning I will still be a fan of the other one.

As for the 13.6 '01 L vs. the 13.8 '01 Cobra...this doesn't surprise me. Upon close inspection of the 60' and 1/8 mile times, I'm sure the L has a huge lead and then it just begins to shrink at which point the L is .2 ahead at the end of the 1/4 mile.

But, with a 104.xx mph trap speed bone stock that Cobra should run low-13s with a driver who is shifting it properly. Just my opinion from years of drag racing. The trap speed of the Cobra shows some very good potential there.

Do the '01 Cobras still have 3.27s in them? If so, this is just "lame" on Fords part. They mate 3.73s with the 5500rpm L motor and 3.27s with a 7000rpm Cobra motor. What's wrong with this picture?

Like Tom (Blue Blood) said, thry do come with 3.27 gears - no option. But they are 8.8 inch rear ends so there are lots of aftermarket gear sets available, assuming tricking the PCM to accept a new ratio is easier than in a Lightning.

PS Hi Tom, long time no see. Did you sell your boat?

I believe the 99 Cobra was supposed to be faster than the 99 Lightning, but they screwed up. Early indications seem to be that the 01 Cobra is substancially faster than the 99 was, so they may have got it right this time.
