Hawkeye,

The new '01 Cobra has IRS just like the '99 did. While swapping in a set of 3.73/4.10s is not an impossible task, it is no longer like the live-axle 8.8s (that I'm very familiar with...see sig) where it would cost ~$450 to have a complete rear gear swap done correctly by a qualified shop (parts/labor). It's pretty extensive to do a gear swap in the IRS from my understanding.

Still, a set of the above-mentioned gears puts the Cobra in the 12s easily with the rest of the car being bone stock.

blueblood,

Actually you _can_ see my collection...you just have to click on the link in my sig. However, I do NOT have a cool pic of everything lined up like that. My driveway is not nearly as big as yours.

WA 2 FST, I understand about the IRS, and you are right, any gear change is expensive if done right, but from what I can tell the IRS unit comes out pretty easy so it may be more like doing a Ford 9", that is do it on the bench and then slip it back in.

I'll know more the day after tomorrow; that's when I pick up my '01 Cobra.

And NO, I'm not getting rid of my '99 Lightning.

Hawkeye,
Looks like great minds think alike! Did you get a coupe or convertible, and what color combo? We picked ours up on May 18th. It has about 450 miles on it. I got the polished wheels, and along with other people, have some tire slip. The drivers side tire has sliped about 7" and the passenger side about 3.5". I was at the store I got my Lightning from today, they had a Cobra convertible on the floor. Looks like the salesmen/prep guys had quite a test ride as the rear tires had sliped several inches on both sides. Keep an eye on the little marks on the tires from the factory where the wheel weights should be. If yours aren't lined up on the rear then someone hit a couple of gears already.
I still have the boat and I still have it at Harbortown. It is, like all boats for sale!
We should try to meet up some time soon.
Tom

Tom,
I guess great minds do think alike. I bought a coupe, mineral grey with polished wheels and dark grey interior. I had to drive over to Apopka to get what I wanted. And trust me, I looked at the tires real good before I bought it. All four still had the little mold **** on them, and they better still be there Wednesday when I pick it up!

Thanks for the tip on tire slip.

Sorry your boat hasn't sold yet, but it gives you a reason to come over this way so we can meet you at the marina for that dinner we have been meaning to have.

Glad to see you're still around.

The Cobra may theoretically be faster at the track, but it is much trickier to launch than the L. The L will beat it 4 times out of 5 on the street.

I don't have the new Cobra but I have to say a manual is more fun to drive - now they need to make it a six speed!

Also I think the IRS is much harder to launch. Wheel hop is a bitch.

I own two Cobra's (93 & 95) and the Lightning. The Lightning is the fastest vehicle. They are all modded at this point but even stock for stock the Lightning would still be the fastest. I won't give you my opinion on the 99+ Cobra's as you probably don't want to hear it. Suffice to say I do not own one

Stock for stock a '98 Cobra will outrun the Lightning in the 1/4 and in top end. This doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out either. If anyone disagrees w/ this statement you really need to check some #'s.

I know, I've owned both

Cool

I've been in that driveway. You can't see what's in the garage though. Tom, where's the Boss?

Why does everyone keep referring "stock vs. stock"? Damn if I'm gonna race someone while stock! That's what chips, pulleys, and filters are for!

Ex-'99 Cobra owner who now drives a faster "stock vs. stock" truck

BTW, 3.73/4.10 gears will NOT get a stock Cobra into the 12's. 4.56's will get it close but tires and a little extra-power have to be added. It may be possible but NO ONE has done it YET with 3.73/4.10's!

Dave,
The Boss is resting in my shop now. I took it around for some estimates a couple months ago. Both convertibles are in the garage here now.

Cool

When i bought my 00L the svt mechanic had to put 3.73 gear and headers on as part of the sale. This guy has an 11 second ranger so he knows speed, anyway he tells me after test driving the L that it would probably beat a 98 cobra and i said maybe and he said no definitly it will. Can you guess what one of the other wrench monkeys owned, yep a 98 cobra with k&n ect. There is a 00L at the local track that does 13.60-70s at full weight, can a 98 cobra get these et's?Ford lightning fastest ford 3 years running.lol 00L 12.796 108.97

Our 01 Cobra is pretty strong. It only has 500 miles on it now, but it pulls very good. I can't race myself so I can't say or care that much which is faster, but you might be surprised.

I traded in a 98 Cobra for the Lightning.

98 Cobra, Off Road H, 4.10's..13.5@104
99 Lightning, JL Ram Air, chip..13.4@105.5

Cobra probably would've been a hair faster in the 1/4 stock to stock.

I couldn't afford to make the Cobra as fast as a slightly modded L, so I chose to trade.

Cobra is funner in the twisties, L is funner down the 1320.

New times w/ JL converter coming soon!
