Thumbs up Dyno results are in......

Thor dyno'd in at 355.8hp @ 423.9 ft-lbs. (Corrected) Now that I have a base line it's time to start the mods. I'll post the dyno graphs ASAP. I would post now but I have no scanner.

This was done on a Dyno jet chassis dyno! 2300 on the odo.

78deg. Baro-29.4-0.27in.HG Correction Factor=1.01

Truck was run in third gear.

Thor, good numbers you got. Looks like you have a nie strong truck. That's one of the best stock 01 numbers I've seen, with the average in the 345hp/418tq range.

Also, with a 1.01 correction factor, that means that those numbers are very close to not needing to be corrected. So that makes your data that much better. And with a BP of 29.4, your truck would have made about 8hp more with really good air (BP over 30).

Hey Thor, hows it going? Those are some great numbers
Are you still planning on doing what we had discussed at work a couple of days ago? Now I am really looking forward to the data you collect

Nice Numbers. How did you break it in?

Thats 418.6 HP at the crank if 15% correction is correct. 498 FTLBS Didn't take time to calculate it up

LightningKid,
Didn't make it to Milan after the dyno. I got out too late. With the traffic and distance I would maybe have gotten two passes in. I'll go next week on the R&D. I'm going to get some data just running around town. Do you have a scanner? If so, i'll bring my graphs in to work and have you post them here. It will be a while before I get a scanner. It will take from my mod fund.

CornerCarver,
Silver is the fastest!

Sal, thanks for your input. I was happy it was in the 350 range. After it running a 13.53 @ 103 I had a pretty good idea it was strong. That, and the camaro i beat on.

twiztid,
I worked at Roush in dyno. I worked on a study on engine break-in. I used the same method jack uses on the NASCAR engines.

Break-in on conventional then race with synthetic. I broke the truck in running laps around the city. I drove 20 miles on the highway and 10 in the city going in circles. I would run the highway one lap with O/D on next off. This for 1000 miles. Then changed to mobile1 synthetic. That's it. Alternate the rpm on highway. I openned the filter and it was fine after the break-in.

Question

Its been my experience that if you want your vehicle to be fast you drive it hard from day one. I have driven the snot out of all my new vehicles right off the lot and they always seem to be a little faster than everyone elses. I'm not an engine designer but I'm of the opinion that any vehicle from about 85 on doesn't need to be babied during break in. I've never had any problems and people can't seem to figure out why my vehicles are always just a little quicker than they should be.

Is there something different about the new Lightning and Cobra engines that they need to be treated any different?

Thor. You running 5w20 or 5w30. I keep hearing we are supposed to run 5w20 :P Does SVT even know? The last car I ran synth in didn't do too well. I may run synth in this one though.

2002Lightning,
Can't tell you why you never had problems. You shouldn't expect to see signs untill after 30,000. Maybe earlier for some who drove theirs hard from day one. I know engine builders will run an engine for at least 45 minutes at 1500-1900 RPM'S to break in the cam and valve train. Then do 5-10 pulls on the dyno to get hp and tq. Non- modular.

There is a braek in proceedure for modular engines. I broke mine in the way I did to ensure a good running engine after 40,000 miles. I plan on keeping this truck a while. If it was a lease I might not have cared as much.

twiztid,
Nothing internal has changed on the enginines from 99-01. Same cams, rods machined tolerances. The 5W20 oil is for fuel economy and emissions. I put 5W30 in mine. I don't like having to thin an oil with the temps here and the foot stomping I like to do.

Thumbs up

Totally agree with Thor1.5w30 oil is a superb blend ,especially for turbo and s/c engines. It is what it was originally formulated for.Just look at many of the lables on the bottle "designed for turbo engines". I use it for my Lightning and my s/c cobra.Havoline standard or any synthetic is good.I prefer Amzoil or Mobile1.

Ok, I am going to drive mine once or twice a week to break it in. It has 174 miles on it. I still dunno on the Synth cause its thinner than conventional. So maybe a 5w30 Synth or a 5w20. Dunno. Thor01 have you got the part numbers for the Mobil 1 Oil Filter or do you not use that? How often should Synth be changed? 3k?

I second BlackBolt99 on your good numbers. I also hope that mine will be that strong. I have been breaking it in at a resonable rate. Moderate speeds, didn't EVEN get in boost till 500 miles! At 1000 miles I let it shift at WOT thru first and second. At 1200 some fart pipe equipped something jumped out in front of me on the NJ Turnpike, so I got to within a car length at 90. When I had a chance I pulled next to him and heard it fart down to a lower gear, I nailed the Lightning, rolled down the window and gave him a "come-on" sign with my hand. I stayed with it till 135 and at that time he was a little dot with a big fart can in the mirror. I guess that means my truck is "broken-in"

twiztid,
I put a motorcrtaft oil filter back in the truck on the first oil change. They are one of the best. As for the 5W20. Change your oil at 1000 miles. Then add what you wan't.

I didn't get my L for fuel economy! And i sure didn't get it to be nice to the enviroment! Pavement pounding inclueded. It's really what you feel comfortable with.

One other thing! I left the O/D off when running the city part of my break-in. After break-in, i only have the O/D on when i get on the E-way. No gas mileage in the city!

Marcus,
I'm shooting you an e-mail soon. I've got something in the works.

Mondo1, I'm with you on the AMZOIL & Mobile1.

Fast Gator,
Thanks and i would say it's broken in. I too fought that other voice in my head for 1000 miles! Just kept saying, "Punch it."
