Ecu or PATS problem? Need help. Big problem
Ecu or PATS problem? Need help. Big problem
We have a big problem. After getting back the truck from JLP after 11 months of tuning, the truck will not work. Very dissapointing. After it startet the first time, it rode very roughly making big bangs and sounded very unhealthy. After a small pit stop after 10 minutes (picked it up at the docks) after we first started it, my father unfortunately pulled out the tuned chip whilest the motor was running. The engine stopped immediately. After this, it wouldn't start again.
What we have done so far:
- we probably burned the ecu (when pulling out the chip), so JLP have send us 3 new ecu's including a predator, so we can choose different tunes. Still doesn't work. The Predator doesn't "recognise the veichle type", meaning that it doesn't get any connection with the ecu.
- We have checked and rechecked alle the fuses in the engine room. All ok.
- We have electronically and manually checked alle the cabels from the engine room (fuse box) to the ecu. No damage. All ok.
The tuner is out of ideas, Ford is out of ideas and the truck is many thousand miles from the US (in Europe).
Is this a ecu problem or pats problem?
Any ideas on how to solve this mess, is highly appreciated.

If you are trying to change the PCM, it needs to be configured to the truck. You can't just swap PCMs.
As mentioned above, you can have a tune with the PATS turned off, which will allow the truck to run with a swapped PCM in most cases.

Rereading your original post I was thinking about the possibilities. Running rough could have been a COP [coil over plug] problem from the truck being exposed to moisture at sea. Was the check engine light flashing while you were driving it? Now that the chip was pulled while running the PCM/ECU will probably need to be reflashed.
you may have to find someone in Europe with a NGS star tester that can help with the PATS stuff or reflashing your computer

Ecu = pcm = computer??
Why should I reflash the computer when Johnny, who has the original tune, have send us 3 new computers with.
And yes, this is a 10 sec truck, if someone want to know
Torkum; the COP thing was interesting. How do you think that that would have an impact? Sea transport? I don't understand. The truck has been transported together with thousand of other cars on a car carrying ship. I'm not sure if the truck has had much contact with the water.

because the computer was unhooked while the engine was running.
did the shipping company powerwash the engine bay? they wanted to powerwash my truck (including the engien bay) but I declined the "service" and opted to do it myself.

You talk about a tuned computer AND your dad removing a chip - which seem to be contradictory -
Did Johnny send you 3 stock computers ?
No, of course. The chip was tuned, not the computer. But the computer have been "modified" (regarding keys and codes)
Instead of chip, we got a predator that has different tunes.
Johnny send us 2 "modified" computers, because after we burned the first one (read the first post), he send a new one that also didn't help, so he send the last one ( 3 all together).

Torkum,
if Johnny and Ford are out of ideas, one should have more than expert knowledge about this, or maybe somebody have experienced this problem before and managed to solve it.
But to answer your question, it seems like we get no air, no fuel and no spark. It seems like the problem lies between the key and the ecu, because the predator can't connect with the ecu. The odometer in the speedometer is also blanck. No info there either.

what happens when you put the key in and try to start the engine?
does the truck still get power to crank over?
do the guages on the dash still work?
did you check all the fuseable links feeding power to the ECU?
did you check the second fuse box under the dash ?(there is one in the engine bay too)
where are you located?
