Red face Boy was that a close one!

Coming home from work today, I pulled up behind a new Acura in a left turn lane. As I was approaching, I noticed the back-up lights on this vehicle were on.

I thought the car looked too new for them to be screwed up, so I approached with caution. I noticed the driver, a young A***n female, was working a cellphone and obviously not paying much attention to the job at hand (driving that is). I stopped about 20' short, just in case.

The turn light went and everyone in front of her moved on. There we sat, while she worked the phone.

I gave a little tap on the horn, she looked up to see no one in front of her, so she gassed it! Much to her surprise, she was accelerating backwards. I braced for the impact, but she figured out what was going on, and stopped just 2' from my truck.

I'm glad one of us was paying attention. If I hadn't been heads up about the reverse lights, I'd be needing my truck's front end, and possibly rear end, repaired.

That was too close.

Why can't people take a little pride in driving, and get it done right?

Unhappy

L.A. drivers, particularly the type that you mentioned, scare the crap out of me...folks don't have any idea what kind of peril they put others in by not paying attention to the task at hand...

Because they don't care if it has a body shop repaired paint job like we do. The cell phone conversation about their last date is of utmost importance. What's original paint and body work to them? We know it matters to us down the line because many, like myself, consider this truck a "keeper", rattling or not.

Thumbs up

Nice bit of driving, it pays to be alert. I think the majority of people just put it on autopilot and drive in the unconscious mode. If everyone practiced "see and avoid" there'd be a hell of a lot fewer accidents. On my way back from Swanson's the other day I'm heading up the 405 near the 110 in stop and go traffic (is there any other kind on the 405?) and I glance over at the gal (non-Asian) in a new Durango in the next lane, and damned if she isn't reading a book, I ***** you not. You'd think she would at least buy the books on tape version. A few years ago I started to pass a guy who was talking on his cell, and he just moved over into my lane without looking. I hit the curb and did a lot of suspension damage. My insurance company charged ME with the accident. I guess I should have just let him hit me. Needless to say, I have a different insurance company now.

Here in Suffolk county NY, as of Jan 1 it is illegal to be driving and talking on a cell phone unless it's a hands-free phone. I think it should be a federal law that you can't drive and talk on a hand operated cell phone. Too many accidents nowadays result from it.

I am on the road for work about 35% of the day; all of the people I work with from top dog to lowly tech have cells so we can communicate fast and get things done. I consider myself the same kind of driver that Jay is, cautious and very defensive to weed out all those mindless idiots that write checks on their steering wheel or have a burger in one hand, a cigarrette in the other and the edges of their hands trying to steer the vehicle. I used to answer all cell calls when I drove; now, realizing that I was driving like a drunk, I don't pickup anymore unless it's a call that is VERY urgent. And, I will try to pull over to answer if possible. My boss doesn't like my new policy; but that's the way it IS going to be. I don't care. This S*** has got to stop. I am for making it illegal as well as other distracting behavior.

Story on the news just last night. A guy driving one of those larger Izuzu cube delviery trucks was killed when he rear ended a semi on I-94. State Patrol determined he had a newspaper spread out over the steering wheel and was reading it while driving.

Talking

I drive the 405 freeway in So Cal everyday. I would say over half of the people are on phones. Usually driving like drunks in stop and go traffic. It seems like most people get on their phones just to pass the time while driving in stop and go traffic. It's actually the worst time to be on the phone!

A couple weeks ago I was "Surrounded" by several of them and just trying to get through the mindless pack. Traffic was stop and go. I'm in the second to the fast lane and just ahead of me in the fast lane a guy talking on his cell slams into another guy talking on his cell! Both phones go flying! The hood of the back car and the trunk of the front car both fly up with new 90 degree bends in the middle of them. The guy in the back had his conversation ended by being punched in the face with an airbag!

I was laughing my *** off as I passed them !!
