Post Wiring brake light on Pro Sport LID

I read here about wiring the third brake light on the Pro Sport Lid for innovation. I followed the instructions and wired to the left rear tail light. all works well. I'm thinking about this and check it out and sure enough when the left turn signal is on the third brake light flashes. This could be a good thing, except I would want it to flash when the right turn signal is on also. Is ther a way to wire this up. If I ran another set of wires over to the right side and wired it the same, would this work?

dont wire both tail lights to the lid.. the power would backflow & cause both blinkers to blink or something.
this is for a 2000 lightning.

i wired my bedcover light to the 3rd brake light at the top of the back window.
(also wired baby jakes at WFC4)

first off, add about 8-10 feet of same sized wire to existing wire on bedcover. its way too much, its just in case.

run the wires inside the bed behind the bedrug (if you have a bedrug), and thru the black plastic plug in the front of the bed.
(drill/cut a hole in plug for wires)

if you dont have a bedrug, run the wires between the bed and cab.

open your drivers side door and pull up trim panel on floor.

pull off black weatherstripping. well, 3/4 of it.
at the back of the trim panel (going towards the bed) is a black rubber grommet. drill/cut a hole big enough to pull all your wire thru the grommet.

to prevent chafing secure wire from bedcover under truck with "zip ties".

pull plastic cover off of the nut that holds the bracket for the seatbelt on the drivers side. it just pops off. be careful.

use a 15mm socket to remove nut. save nut for later use.

pull panel off.

remove both clothes hooks from back of headliner.

remove lens off on dome light. there is a small slot that a small screwdriver can go into to pop it off. using your fingernails sucks.

pull out the 3 screws that hold the dome light up. be careful not to touch your screwdriver to the lamp and a screw at the same time! it will blow the dome light fuse. (sorry baby jake)

unplug dome light and set aside..

if there isnt enough room to get to the wiring harness, you may have to take the passengers side seatbelt and panel off too.

okay.. got it all apart? good.

run wires behind panels (right behind where the weatherstripping was) and above headliner to the wiring harness connector for the 3rd brake light.

now for my 2000 lightning, the wires i used were:
green - positive
black with white stripe - negative

it may be different for your 2001 L.
if it is, use a voltmeter to test all the wires.
have someone press the brake pedal while you test the wires (3 of them) it shouldnt take but a second to find the correct pair.
one wire is for the cargo lights - positive
one wire is for the brake light - positive
one is a common ground - negative

after you determine which wires to use, hook the bedcover wires to them using wire taps.
cut off any excess wire you dont need before you do this.

have someone stand behind the truck to make sure everything works correctly. (brake lights, blinkers, 3rd & 4th brake lights, and cargo lamps.)

if the 3rd brake light doesn't work, dont panic.. swap the wires. LED's dont work with reversed wires. you may have reversed the wires by accident. (like me) LOL

put it all back together & enjoy.

this is all from memory, so if anything is unclear or confusing just post back or email me.

hope this helps!

2Shodon,

I was the one who posted the wiring in the taillight setup. I never looked at the wiring schematic at the time, just wingged it. Anyway, my wife and I tested after completion but it didn't cross my mind to try the turn signals.

One day a few weeks ago, Fast-As-L was following me and said your light looks cool but acts kinda weird. When I saw your post, I went home last night and checked and sure enough, it blinks with the signal on. (Now that sucks ). I did verify with the factory manual that the wiring is for BOTH the stop and turn signal on the same wire....

So.....I think I may rewire according the Cloneteks suggestion to utilize just the brake light. I still think its a good idea to splice in and use some barrel connectors to make the lid removable if needed.

I apologize for the oversight....

Cool

Brooks,

No spacers yet. I'm sure they will be here soon.
I am going to remove my lid tonight and move my forward hinge brackets aft in an attempt to get the lid OFF OF MY TAILGATE! I'll keep you posted when I can.

Later,
Jake...
