Hey, it looks like its geting kinda ruogh in here. I gotta agree, I'd take the truck any day, since I have lost to more newer Lightnings than I have C5s. And I have only raced one newer Lightning ('01) and beat him 2 out of 3. I think I am up to several on the C5s, still waiting. Well, I might be at the track this Sunday. We shall see. They are quick, but can they haul an engine in the back? How about towing a project truck? Or mybe a load of roofing shingles for the weekend project?

I like the sleeper effect too, from the truck.

Famous last words from one of my first kills from the girl in the passenger seat...

"Is that thing really fast"?

Once again, I might get beat by a C5 this weekend, but the way things look, it doesnt look good for them...

I too have been looking at the Z06 corvette.
its $50,000 plus and I like the performance.
If it was not for the Z06 I would not consider the vette. found two in the tampa area one black and one red. but then I seen the torch red interior and thats what I want.
they are looking for one for me or I might order a 2002 model. anyway my first choice was a L but with the Z06 I gave it another thought. and owning 6 trucks already, a car would be a great addition.

I have had a deposit on a 2002 Z06 since Sept. 2000. Couldn't wait any longer for a new toy so I went and bought the L. I pulled my deposit last week for a number of reasons. This is my first Ford and I never thought I would own a Ford. To make me a convert says alot.

Heard the Z06's are having oil consumption problems. I know L's have their probs also, but, at almost half the price (X-Plan)I can be more tolerant.

I'm the one yellow00 is talking about that traded my L for a new Vette. I have to say I loved the L but it was time for a change. Also with the L's known problems, I was getting worried (Clunk, intercooler, etc...). They are both great, each person must decide which one they like better. Red gen, I didn't think yellow00 was bashing you, just making a statement. Anyway, just call him and i'm sure you two can get it worked out. You going to cool springs tomorrow?? call me 202-0652

Ok granted it's not and 01 L or an 01 Vette, but here's what I did:

Heres my take. Bought the Vette used, went to the track. Saw this black truck called a Lightning, saw this black Lightning thing run a white Lightning. Both trucks posted better times than I did in my Vette. Researched what a Lightning was, decided I gotta have one of these. Thus I ordered one. I currently have both pictured vehicles. The Lightning is my daily driver, it is more comfortable to get in an out of then my Vette (C4's were not as easy as a C5), the L has a much nicer ride, it doesn't track like my Vette, I can put my RC cars in the L, I can put tools, ladders, etc in the L to go work on my rental homes. I love both these vehicles, but I must say I enjoy the L alot more than I do my Vette. No doubt about it if you are looking for practical vehicle and a more exclusive vehicle than the L is of course the way to go. But the Corvette has always been a unique and highly demanded and respected vehicle.

Cool

It's kind of funny that you mention this. I was debating between the two and finally went w/ the Lightning because I needed to keep a vehicle that could tow.
Since your question is purely hypothetical, I'd go with the C5 no doubt. Stock for stock, the L will get beat by a 6-speed C5. Well, that would hold true for a kickdown or highway race, but a stoplight would be a little different. You can do a cam swap for ~$1,100 (labor included) in an LS1, and a nice "middle-of-the-road" cam will show a solid 35-40 RWHP if you have a nice set of headers. The norm for all of the bolt-ons, stock heads, and an aftermarket cam for an LS1 is right at 390 RWHP (including LS6 intake manifold). That makes for one LETHAL C5 that can easily click off some low 12's w/ a good driver. However, you'll have $3,000-$4,000 in mods. For me, nothing can beat a C5 with a nice lope.

Cool

I have owned a '99 L (one of the first on the board), it is now sold. It was replaced with a '01 HD. Also own a '00 Vette. They are all different and all great vehicles. The L was a blast to drive but I didn't care for the "spartan" interior. The Vette gets way better gas mileage (20-23 mpg all the time) and is also a blast to drive. The HD is much better in terms of "creature comforts" than the L and I have gotten way more compliments on the appearance of the truck in 3mos. than I ever got with the L or the Vette, for that matter.
As far as straight line, my Fairlane will dust them them all.

2001 C5 or a Lightning? That's easy for me...Lightning, hands down. A Z06 would muddy the waters a bit though.

I've had a 30th Anniversary T/A for the past 2 years and loved every minute of it. I bought the 30th T/A instead of a Vette because it has vette level performance, lower price, much more rare, and got LOTS of looks and compliments. I see dozens of vettes every day all day, and they are undeniably SUPER cars, but just too common for me. How many Vettes are they making a year now...didn't I see somebody on here say 30,000 or 40,000 a year?!?!

After making the mistake of taking a silver 2001 Lightning for a test drive, I sold the 30th. I've never been as pumped and excited to drive any vehicle as I have been my L. It can do everything my 30th T/A could and then some...just as fast (faster off the line, even better), better mod bang for the buck on the L ($1,000 on L can get you nearly a full second in the quarter, only got me maybe .2 or .3 on the T/A (exhaust, lid, filter, MAF)), handles just as well, the drive and ride feels better, just as many looks/compliments (well, this IS Oklahoma, truck nuts galore), seats more (wife and daughter can ride side by side with me, woot!) (face it, 2 rear T/A seats are worthless), has more ground clearance (can drive some places where T/A could not), 2001 L insurance is CHEAPER than 1999 T/A, it's a TRUCK (sleeper kills are such a hoot), and of course...it can haul stuff. No offense to the Vette guys, I love the cars, I just love my L more.
