Cool Another dreaded exhaust question....

I've decided my Magnaflow isn't loud enough for me. I think I'm going the dual Flowmaster route with 3.5" chrome tips out the side since my stock ceramic looks like crap and lots of people love the twin Flows.

Anyway, since my stock system is long gone, can someone tell me the diameter of the stock pipes rearward of the muffler? I know they're supposed to be 2.5", but somehow they looked bigger than that when they were on the truck. The reason I ask is because my muffer guy showed me 2.5" pipe and it looked small. He said his pipe is 2.5" O.D. If the L was 2.5" I.D., then that will matter and maybe I need him to use 3".

If anyone has a dial caliper that can measure the O.D. of the pipes, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for the help.

Can't do the straight pipes guys - I had Dynomax bullet race mufflers on it (which quiets it some over straight pipes) and it made my ears ring every time I drove it to work for 25 miles because of the "helicopter chop-chop-chop" resonance in the cab.

Please, somebody tell me the O.D. of the stock tailpipes as my appt. is Friday. I'd crawl in the mud to get it for you guys!! lol

It's exactly the same size from the exhaust manifold to the inlet of the ceramic tips, 2.5". Whether they measure O.D. or I.D. it's 2.5" in muffler parts world. If the muffler guy still doesn't know then have him measure the pipes that haven't been changed ahead of the muffler(s).

BTW, the ceramic tips are 3" so make sure the 3.5" fit/look acceptable.

Cool

Jim,

A few people have lost ET with Flows. I would run before and after comparisons. You might say a few choice words after the results. I'll be here to say "I told you so", LOL.

I felt like kicking myself in the a$$ everytime I've installed Flows. They never stayed on long. One only a week. Good Luck.

I have magnaflow high volume cats and Dynomax race magnums. Great rumble at idle and good noise. No resonance, but, don't plan on listening to classical music @ 80mph.

Thnx, I think you're refering to the TranAm run,(13.191?) he was sleeping at launch. Think he ran a 13.6 or 7. Hope to get some better times Friday if the rain stays away.

A trip out to the parking lot with calipers reveals 3" od tips. Looks more like 2 1/4 at the muffler though. This is a stock 2001

Hey Jim, I noticed a lot of noise difference when I put on the high flow cats. My set-up at idle is quiet but when your rollin it hums pretty good. When the truck is pulling away at part throttle it has a good loud tone , not obnoxouis(spelling?). At full throttle all that is heard is the S/C! Have you thought about the Dynomax Ultra Flow? Good noise and not quite the resonation like the Flowmasters. They sound good on a friends 10 sec GT. Have fun! Josh

Cool

Thanks guys for the replies.

Mike, thanks for the actual measurement - That's what the exhaust guy was trying to tell me because he just worked on one, but I didn't believe he remebered correctly.

BadAzz,

No doubt I'll have Bassani on there by next year. It's only money, right! lol

Chuck,

Don't even say it - You're all warmed up to shout the "told ya so" aren't you! lol I'm keeping the Magnaflow intact in case things go wrong...
