Post I/C Leak Prevention

Okay how many '01s have got the IC leak?

I just got a '01 L with 16 miles. What can I do NOW to help prevent the leak in the future? Some of you mentioned distilled water. What happens when winter comes?

Thanks,
Mike

You will need a mix of coolant and water in the winter months or you will expand or crack something. Only fill it with water if you have the leak.

Personally i would just drain it, shut the pump down somehow to prevent cavitation, and stay off the boost.

Winter? Surely you jest. There is no winter in Irvine. If I were you I would just go with the coolant you have, and mark the reservoir level with a Magic Marker. At the first sign of leakage I would add a can of BG cooling system sealer. Stopped my leak immediately, and it was leaking badly. I don't see any reason to go to the distilled water, unless you are leaking coolant through the i/c into the motor, and the BG should prevent that. However, if you plan do do much racing, water is a better transferrer of heat than glycol, so you might want to use water at the strip. (I think I will try filling up with ice water and gettin a real cold charge). Just remember, tap water is not good for your system, and if you leave the water in there you should add a bottle of water pump lubricant and rust inhibitor. And if you do so down in your frigid climate, adding a pint or two of alcohol wouldn't hurt.

Mike, do nothing! Just enjoy your new '01.

All the distilled water, BG, etc. posts apply if the i/c is already leaking. There is no proven way to prevent a leak.

Anyway, the i/c problem is fixed in the '01!
Have faith.

I agree with DreamAboutL I have allmost 7000 miles on mine, I am having a blast with the L, and my intercooler level has not changed a bit.

I hope for fords sake and all yours that it doesn't leak, but I would not be supprised if they did leak guys. serioulsy what did they change that makes you think there any different. they added another row of fins to cool it. hey I would had some leak sealer, and switch to water right away just to make sure. I would want to take anymore chance's with my baby.

Thumbs up

From what I UNDERSTAND-ALL our I/Cs incl.the 2001s? just lay in the intake without any brackets to mount them to the intake (keeps them from moving under boost and harmonics). Until Ford mounts them securley to keep them from moving-under boost- ALL the I/Cs WILL WEAR from chafeing AND LEAK!! THEY HAVE TOO lEAK. There's only so much metal to wear before they spring a leak.
So what is the BIG FIX we are supposed to get from FORD for our 99-00s? And what did they do to the 2001s I/C except to add an extra row of cooling fins? Only time will tell on the 01s, but don't hold your breath that they won't leak too!! IMHO
Just my 02.

Dan (mine started leaking @ 17,500 miles and is still leaking)

I agree with Dan here....

I'm not being negative, just that I believe that there will be a 100% failure rate in ALL 99-0x L's. The design is the same, just that one extra row of fins. (Also the runners in the lower intake manifold)

I suspect that as the population gets more miles, we will start seeing leaks.

Up Yours FORD!!!!

Do you hear me!!!!!!!

Thanks for building such a great truck with such a fatal flaw. I could have done better with Cooter and Roscoe!

How hard is it to actually keep customers? Possibly this is why your stock price is a lofty $28 a share.

To all you '01 guys...hopefully, the new I/C won't leak, but I'd say 90+% of us '99-00 owners who've had them leak didn't see the problem til 12k+ miles.

Mine made it to 14.5k and then had a very small leak (less than 8 oz lost in 500 miles...its vaporizing in there at that rate). My dealer got me a new I/C within 24hrs and it took less than a day to install it.

No one likes to think that Ford won't fix the thing, but at least the supply of replacements seems to be there.
