Post Which plugs to use?

I posted this on the NLOC board but nobody answered so I will try again here.

Here's a good question. It is common knowledge amongst supercharged Mustang tuners that the best way to go is with a standard Autolite/Motorcraft plug about 1 heat range cooler than stock. I have been told almost universally never to use a platnum or splitfire plug on my supercharged stang. I guess the reason is that they tend to foul easily. So why is it that the supercharged Lightnings tend to like these kind of plugs? Somebody please enlighten me!!

No, its more like adding a second supercharger and twin turbos to your truck!

Should be good for 500hp.

I don't know why SVT chooses the platinum plugs, but they work for most of us. Had to be a reason and they don't seem to hurt performance.

I will...

95 Saleen, I think you mixed up the splitfires and "type-r" sticker, the "type-r" sticker is worth about 500 ponies and the splitfires turn your engine into a VTEC.

OK ... more science please!!! Still nobody seems to know the answer and yes I looked at the other threads but question is still unanswered.

Maybe I should try splitfires in my Mustang even though at least 20 people have told me to stay away from them if you have a supercharger.

DJANIMATE:

I stand corrected. But I was almost positive that it was the random japanese characters that turned your engine into a V-Tec?

95 Saleen, haha - I see those things in the auto parts store and I crack up "Powered by {random Japanese letters}". I think anyone who buys one of those should be taken to the back room and given a good Singapore style whoopin.

MRBBQMAN - Does that lawnmower have a blower on it? what about a chipenfilter?

ATI,
Sorry your serious question turned into 'amateur night at the Apollo' (me included), I run splits on my Lightning and I love them. I think the reason they say not to run them is because they burn real hot and you can actually melt them with the addition of a turbo/supercharger. At least one guy has melted some on his L but I've been checking mine and have had no problems. I've been told if your running real lean like from a chip you could have problems.

Cool

MRBBQMAN,

I went back to test the Autolite 103 plug which performed well. I could only hold out a 1,000 miles before a fresh set of Splitfire SF10D's went back in. All was right with the world again, LOL. I even got a $1.00 rebate on each plug after printing the rebate coupon from their web site. Rebates usually take forever but I received a check in less than 3 weeks. I couldn't believe it.

ATIDominator,

If you are not having pinging problems or maybe running nitrous on the lean side then Splits would be the best running plug you could put in a Gen2 L. I don't think the Splits can handle the heat as well as a solid ground electrode and will fail quicker under these conditions. If you are running on the ragged edge and hear ANY detonation then buy a plug with a solid ground electrode with a little luck maybe it won't fail. If you don't fit into this catagory then the Splits will offer you the best daily driving experience with better throttle response.

ATI,

I think the reason no one answered you is because this topic has been brought up so many times, do a search and you'll find hours of fine reading material.

i use splitfires, because of their special patented twin spark design, it's like having a 16 cylinder engine, or something
