Thumbs up JL Driveshaft loop Pays off!

well went to the track tonight for some R&D made 2 passes back to back went 12.2's@ 111 with a terrible 1.90 60 ft. 3rd pass hot lapping it went 12.30 @ 109.5 i lifted near the finish line because i felt a small vibration. i figured 1 of my tires thru a weight and made it unbalanced. so i go back to the pits put in my JLDIABLO Test chip. let the truck cool down and i head down to the staring line heat up the old slicks and launch it HARD! to my suprise WAM! there goes the drive shaft snapped in in 2 pieces! man was i glad i had the loop on it saved my fuel tank from getting hit by the drive shaft and possible saved the truck from fire! so what ever you guys do Get a Loop! even if it isn't mine! its definatly worth it! Your new chip just makes too much power.

Was it the original '99 L driveshaft? Did the actual shaft split or one of the u-joints?

The drive shaft wasn't the origanal 1. it was a JDM driveshaft. i got the original steel back in now! i'll be doing some more testing this fridaynight with the steel 1 and i'll see if there is any difference.... JL

JL,

Glad to hear you didn't damage your truck or yourself. These things are a lifesaver, well worth the money. Here's some of JL's pics.

Glad that everything is OK JL (who would I get my stuff from if it wasn't) . That is why most tracks should make that mandatory. It is something that costs so little but could save you so much if anything ever happened...Although pics would be real cool

JL, glad to hear the loop kept the damage down. What concerns me is that the drive shaft broke. Does anyone know the torque rating of the JDM drive shaft? I would think that it is too early for fatigue to cause the break. How does the break look? A close up of the break would be interesting. I am going over to the SVT web site and post the same concern. JL, how much torque do you estimate that you are getting at the flywheel? You did say it broke at launch so there is a multiplier for the gear ratio also.

Sorry to hear about you mishap JL, but glad to know you were prepared.

For the price of admission, adding a driveshaft loop should really be one of the first mods any of us do. Maybe seeing this happen to JL will be a wake up call to all of us.

I don't know the Torque rating for the "JDM" shaft, But I do know that the shafts JDM sells are factory '01 Lightning shafts. Looks like the '01 Lightnings will have their own problem areas. I can see it now, '01 Ligtnings with 2000 shafts! I knew there was a reason I kept my steel one. Lloyd

EGADS!!!!!

Sorry to hear the shaft died yet VERY glad to see the loop did it's job, SAVING YOU AND THE TRUCK.

In looking at the break point, the back half may have done some banging around on its own.

Respectfully,

Happily Looped

From what I remember from school That is an odd failure. Normally anything round failing from torque results in a spirol failure. Yours is almost straight across. That would indicate out of ballance or a weak section in the tubing. It is also a little odd that it is close to the center of the shaft. A torque failure would normaly start at a stress riser like the welds. Just an observation.

Hope this helps

Andy
