I can't quote the source from memory, but for some reason I think all newer Lighnings are 50-state legal. I could be wrong, but that assumtion got stuck in my head somehow...

Yea, i also am pretty sure that all Ford vehicles are now coming with 50-state emissions. To my knowledge, it was too expensive for them to build a california car and a different car. hence, they are only making the Ca emission legal. I ordered my vehicle out of state, but as a precaution, i ordered Ca emissions on it. under the hood there is a sticker that states the emissions from the truck falls under the low LEV levels for california. So, basically i would order them just to be sure. You wouldn't want a car that would be kicked out of the state.

I would think that the law applies to new vehicles sold in the state of California. What would happen to all the folks who moved to California from other states, would they have to sell their vehicles or put new smog devices on them. Just a thought, I don't know for sure. Must be some members on the board who have moved to California, or bought out of state.

Cabraco, yes you have to make your car legal for CA if you move here. I believe you also have to pay some fairly hefty fees.

They no longer charge out of state cars "smog impact fees" here in CA. It was deemed unconstitutional by the CA Supreme Court. The Governer had to give back $650 million to people they hosed for these fees back to 1992.

You will have to pass a smog test ($) and pay use tax ($). It's the same percentage as sales tax. That will vary county by county, depending on where it is registered.

Ah, yes, then there is the exorbitant registration, which is about $550 a year on a new Lightning.

They will get their piece of the action one way or another.

It seems CA dealers are holding to MSRP. If I were to look out of state to use my x-plan, do I need to order a truck with CA emisions?

Droptail - I ordered my 01 from a dealer in Ohio (Marshall Ford West) - had it shipped directly to a dealer near me in southern California for extra $225 - was very easy to do - paid Ohio dealer for truck and paid CA dealer the CA sales tax and title/license fees - I did have the Ohio dealer place the order with CA emissions option - saved a lot of $$ over ordering from CA dealers --

There is not a CA emisions package. Only on bikes and low production exotics nowadays

Things may have changed since I ordered last December - but my factory order shows feature code 422 "california emissions system" and "non-calif order for calif reg"

Gotta love Alaska. In certain areas, no smog checks. Just visual, and thats $1 and not really done. Registration every 2 years and costs about $100.

Jim,

I bet that option is really just adding the sticker that says it's legal in CA.

Would have to double check but if you move to CA you can register a vehicle with 49 state emissions after it has something like 12000miles on it if you lived out of state where you bought it.In the check station they can use the 49 state standard then .Thats what my mother has [49 state] and has it registered in CA and no problems retagging it.If it is less than 12k then you need to sell it or keep it in your home state for the period till it gets 12k on it.
