Question calling Sal (LT) or Factory Tech or any Tranny people

Sal, I know you've had alot of experience with L's new and old. My question is I'm considering making my 00' a drag only truck. I want to keep the original drivetrain for the cool factor. However for round after round bracket racing I would like the consitancy and reliabilty that a trans-brake provides. Can it be done?? Are there bigger stall converters available?? Am I just stupid?? I asked this once before on a different thread but nobody on here seems to even know what a trans-brake is, so I thought I'd ask the pros (yourself and Factory Tech) Please help! I've been running trans-brakes in all my race vehicles for years and I don't know if I'd even bother racing the 00' without one.

I am not them, but maybe I can shed my.02 on the subject. I've used trans brakes before but only in cars that needed to get the car up in the power band to launch. 4000-up. Plus a trans brake makes enormous heat.
I don't think that the Ls trans will take it. Especially the rev, temp sensors that shift it out of od into 2-3-4 shift at the first hint of overreving (at burn outs or a spike in temp (same thing).
The Lightnings power is derived from a roots type blower that has a power curve startig at approx. 1900-2100 rpm (when it starts making boost.) Centrifical Super Chargers would benifit from a trans brake because you have to wind them up. (depend on rpm to build boost)
I think a better way to go is a 2200-2400 stall speed torque convertor with a VERY GOOD TRANS COOLER!!
I am installing a Perma-Cool 6-pass trans cooler w/ 10"fan to lower the trans temps over 90'Degrees.For that very reason.
Will let you know how it works out.
I've had the od-trans problem a number of times both on burn-outs and being hung out to dry at the tree.
(Right, Spiro?)
Hope this helps?

Dan

1RedDevil,
Thank you for your response. Maybe I was delerious from sleep deprevation or something. I don't know what I was thinking, I'm not ready to quit driving my baby everyday and make it a drag truck anyway. Besides I've already got one of those. I am planning on adding a good tranny cooler as you mentioned because of my past history with all Ford Transmissions. Please let me know how the cooler/fan combo work out nixscot@chrobinson.com Again thanks for response, it was nice to hear a educated one.

Just curious, but I don't understand the concept of a "drag only" Lightning. Why don't you sell the Lightning and buy something faster/lighter? Instead of taking a perfectly good street vehicle and turn it into a marginal racer?

Lightning's are cool on the street and some people are going fast (For daily drivers), but when you get down to it a race car will usually kick your ***.

You can build a Mustang Coupe for a very reasonable amount of cash and run 10's if it's a drag only vehicle. Put FMS's 512 stroker engine 600HP/600TQ and a drivetrain that can take it.......you'll see high 9's. You could build that for less than $15,000 if you start with a 4-banger.

A drag only lightning is kind of like modifying a rice-boy's Honda. Why?
