Had my aluminum drive shaft installed today.Took the truck up to 70 80 mph. No more vibrations. Nice and smooth.They should of had these drive shafts In the 99 and 00 L's. Bob.

 

At a workshop yesterday, I saw a driveshaft from a crashed 2001 4.2L V6 reg cab SWB, and it was the same as our "brand-new-for-2001-Lightning-only-aluminum-all-singing-and-dancing" driveshafts.

Do you mean same identical part number stamped on the side, verified by looking up part numbers for a 2001 F150 4.2L V6 and a 2001 Lightning from the Ford dealer, or you THINK they are the same because the're both shinny and you're just passing the RUMOR on here?

Reading my post again, I agree, it sounds as if I did all the research already, and found the 2 shafts to be the same. This is not the case.

I should have asked:

"Since the 2 shafts have the same 3 colors on the gearbox end, and the same diameter, do we know if Ford has gone to a new shaft on all the SWB RegCab's for 2001? It would make sense to share parts even if that means the more mundane F150's get a vastly over-engineered driveshaft. Anyone from FordLand that can comment? I would like to see a chart showing the models and the driveshaft dia and weight or wall-thickness."

Great question and thank you for clearing that up. I would also like to apologize to you for misspelling your screen name in my previous posts, whoops.

Maybe Ford changed to the aluminum driveshaft to solve vibration issues on all the reg cab trucks .

So, is there anyone from Ford would like to clear this up for us?

 

I use a driveshaft balance ring on my other truck. it works very well. it is not the same diameter as the "L"'s, so i can't swap to see if it makes a difference. i'll look up the company and order another one for $40 to see if it smooths it out, b4 ordering an aluminum one

 

I also had my aluminum drive shaft installed today.

$40 for the install, they wanted to charge me for 1.2 hours, BS!

I told them it would take 15 minutes, so we decided that how ever long it would take they would charge $66 an hour, I never saw a person move so slow in my life.

Ah yes, the drive shaft... While I never had a vibration, I can tell that something does feel different. In my case I wouldn't say smoother, it just feels like you can sense what the rest of the truck is doing a little better.

 

Hurricane Larry, when your out driving that short "sport" bus , be xtra careful with your passengers, those goofy bastards are just about the only thing i have going, in this crazy world
