Post Wheel Balancing

Why is it, that the wheel balancing weights are put on the outside of the rim, the weights always seem to eventually rust, and the rust spreads to the rim. Is there any reason the weights can't be put on the inside, where it won't show?

The inside is where they belong. That's where mine are.

You have to ask them to do it. Probably not as easy.

You can ask the shop to only put weight on the inside. Most modern tire balancer can work in two settings. One of them calculates how much weigh to put on each sides of the wheel, the other setting do the same thing except only on the inside of the wheel. I was told it is not as precise, but all of my wheels seems to be well balanced.

mine are "static" balanced.. the weights are on the inside of the rim.
all you have to do is ask the tire guys to do it. it rides just fine.

Seems I read somewhere that to get the best balance, both inside and outside of the rims would require weights. My 01 Lighting only has 500 miles on it so no rust has appeared on the rims - - yet. Are you guys having problems with rust? If so, is there anything that you are doing to keep it from spreading?

The best thing to do is to get the stick on weights that go in the center of the rim. You can get these at NTB, etc......a small tire shop won't have them, but can usually get them.

Cool

My L has weights on both inside & outside.
When i get my tires rotated(@5000 mi)i'll
have them rebalanced, and have all the weights
put on the inside.

Dont know about Androids and sheep BUT the steel strap used to secure the lead weights will rust and stain the painted aluminum rims. I have 2 sets of SVT rims painted and chromed. I paid the extra $ to have the stick on weights put on both sets when I had the tires swapped. No vibration that I have noticed but then again I dont drive very fast.
