Intercooler update, info hot from dealer!
Long time reader here...
I was minding my own business when I decided I wanted my low intercooler fluid checked out.
I went to the dealership up here (Cal Worthington), last December and they said nothing was wrong. That was at 24,400 miles. I am now at 25,600 or so and they said something is not right. It was down a good 3.5-4inches. I told them they put dye in the resevoir and there were NO EXTERNAL LEAKS. Service rep agreed, it was going through the tailpipe.
Now get this...
They wont give me a loaner car, even though I bought an extended warranty. Its a 99, only 00 plus get loaner cars now. Mentioned that my warranty will get me $28 a day towards rental, for 5 days, MAX.
Want more bad news???
He said in order to prove to Ford that it is indeed a leaky intercooler, he has to tear down the truck, take pictures, email them to Ford, then wait for Ford to send the intercooler parts, which are on national backorder.
He also told me I wasn't the only Lightning in town that is having this problem, another has a leaking one, and another is in the same boat as me. Could this be Tundra? I told him I can still beat Vettes, and he chuckled and said he saw the videos. They know about him.
I told him about the long list a lot of people here have contributed to, and he asked from which site, and I named this one. I Should have said BlueOvalNews.com, my mistake.
Now finally for some good news....
He said that Ford is indeed working on a replacement intercooler, for the Lightnings with the problems. He said there might be a recall, but most likely will not be. They will however replace leaky intercoolers under warranty. Problem is, Ford does not know when the new intercoolers will be available, and that there is a large demand for them.
THAT MUST BE A HUGE 1%!
This was why I took my truck in December! So they can fix the damn thing!

And that is why I traded in the truck that I loved so much. I can't deal with that kind of bull****. I would wind up shooting somebody.

That's total BS that your dealer is giving you. Do a seach on my username and intercoolers, you'll find a post where I state that I called my SR and told him about my 3rd intercooler going bad. He ordered my intercooler over the phone, I didn't even turn my L in until the intercooler arrived.
BTW national backorder for an intercooler means 3-5 days.

My intercooler had been leaking for sometime 5-6000miles worth i just never wanted to part with the truck to get fixed but I did about 3 weeks ago..turns out the SR and tech are local racers also and they knew who i was..got a free rental and had new intercooler in the NEXT day..also noticed teflon flakes????? all over the IC so i will be getting a new blower put on as soon as it arrives!!!also they are any mod friendly tech offered to install anything i buy..need-less to say my truck wont be stock much longer!!!later

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I think a lot of it has to do with the relationship you have with your service manager. My service manager has worked with me since I got here a year ago. The L went in for several minor things, and my first intercooler. IT was studdering, sputtering, etc. due to fouled plugs. They fixed the plugs/etc and wanted to do a usage test on the truck. I said, sure, I'll drive it around and foul another set of plugs if youw ant to replace them. I suggested he call SVT. he did, they said to replace it. Parts took about 2 weeks and they installed it.
My service manager moved uptown to the new Ford dealer in town. I moved with him. Anyhow, my L went in on Tuesday with another intercooler leak. It is fixed and I'm picking it up Saturday. Seems as if Ford is getting them in stock for whatever reason.
Hope yours gets fixed.
