Angry Just did my first 01L oil change

I just changed the oil at 1400 miles on my new 01L. When I was pouring it from the catch pan into my recycle container I noticed bad things in the oil!! The were a lot of brass looking flecks and small shavings in the bottom of the pan (which was clean prior to the drain). I'm assuming they're brass because they're definately gold in color. The oil had a slight gold iradescent color to it. Is this normal...I hope so. The only thing I know of that could cause this is the blower rotors, distributor gear or something of that nature. Everything else is normal, good power, no unusual noises. Any opinions????

Well, I agree it does not sound good. Since it is your first change, I would really pay attention next time you change it. Also, I am pretty sure it is not a distibuter gear!

Sounds like my first oil change. Weird little speckles. No problems so far. I think there is a filter magnet available somewhere. May help with most of the particles.

Cool

I did my first oil change this weekend as well.I think they put some kind of dye in
the oil of new engines, to check for leaks.

I changed my oil at about 350 miles to get rid of the metal particles that always show up in new engines. I also put a magnet next to the drain plug so when the truck is sitting the loose magnetic particles stay down.

Undy,
This is very unusual from my experience! It would be interesting to have the spent oil filter disassymbled. If you dont have a pipe cutter this large, your local muffler shop will cut the can off the filter for you. This will give you access to the innerds so you can see what may be trapped in the filiment.

Just a couple of cents worth,
J.

I had a similar experience on my first oil change. The flecks are something you would expect in a new motor. The shavings are a different thing.

I found many small 3/8" long shavings on my first oil change. Upon further inspection, it was decided that these were off of the cam tensioners. They were non-metallic, and light grey in color. On subsequent oil changes, no more were found. I have 19,000+ miles and still going strong.

Just keep track on your next oil change.

If it was me, I would send a sample of the oil to black stone, or another oil analysis company, it will show you exactly what is in the oil, and most likely why. It always helps me sleep at night, knowing what is going on, I hate not knowing.
