Post Testing Under Hood Temperatures

I"ve been reading the recent posts concerning the difference in hp with conical filters vs the '01 airbox. So I decided to hook up a digital thermometer inside the hood in order to measure the air temp. Set the probe beside my 9" S&B (1" away)and ran the L for about a half hour. I didn't calibrate the thermo. so I can't guarantee the actual numbers, but trend should be okay. On startup the digital thermo. read about 90 degrees (inside a closed garage). Rode around and started heating up after 30 minutes to 115 degrees. As soon as to hit a sustained speed of 35 mph for about 5 secs, temperature starts dropping. After a mile it's back to 90 degrees. Stop and temp goes back up to 115 degrees. Read temps several times and always dropped back to startup temp. By the way, I felt the air intake and it was cool to the touch, never paid attention to that before. I'll calibrate the thermmeter this weekend and try a longer ride. Later.

DreaminAboutL,

I downloaded a freeware verson of Autotap about a year ago, but never saw how to build a cable for it. http://www.autotap.com/downloads.html

If you built a cable, can you tell us the pin out and the type of connector to the plug under the steering wheel that you used?

HI!... 00BLACKLIGHTNING : I installed a digital therm sensor in my air intake system about a year ago. It proves that the open filters DO NOT COST you H.P because of undehood temps. What people don't realize is that when our trucks are in motion they create a vacuum under the truck. This vacuum sucks the hot air out of the engine compartment. I have two of these digital temp sensors in my truck. They are digital screen readout displays that mount on your dash or wherever and have a wire temp sensor that goes through the firwall and out to the engine compartment. I have mine mounted through my K&N filter directly in front of my MAF sensor. This way it tells me exactly what the temp is, in my air intake tube that the MAF is picking up. My other one is has it's sensor mounted outside the truck to pick up the outside temp. There is about only 5 degree's difference between the two readings. I also found that the temp goes up when sitting at a stoplight for a long period of time or in a parking lot. I have found that when sitting still that if I turn on my electric fans that the temp drops dramatically. If you do a search on this you will find a very lengthy thread on this subject when I 1ST installed the temp gage and what my results were.

Neal,
Very interesting information. What you did is true test of what temp air the engine is pulling. A mere 5 degree temp delta is truly negligible indicating that the aftermarket filter does not pull hot underhood air as I was thinking.
I want to do a search on your long post, but I have no clue as to what keywords to enter in. Can you help?

351stang,
If you looking to do work to cool the intercooler fluid, then check out JohnnyLightnings new power cooler. I think at the track that would work exceptionally well.

What is the Autotap? Is it a program you run on a laptop while driving the truck? How does it interface?

Neal
I did a search for your post but didn't see anything that would fit. Do you recall the title of the post? Thanks.

What would be the ultimate test if you could do it (I don't have any experience with temp probes) would be to run it into the intake track between throttle body and the filter. Run it and take readings with the aftermarket fileter setup, then install the factory box setup and see what the intake track temps are.
Very interesting info though. Seeing how there is a delta of 25 degrees and it takes seconds to cool after you are moving, that indicates that at the track we will definitely be pulling warmer air at first.
What was the outside air temperature as you were taking your readings?

There is an Autometer 2-channel air-charge temperature gauge that would be great for this kind of testing. It's two channels, so you can have an air inlet temp and measure temp after the intercooler. I don't know how expensive it is, but I'm playing with the idea of getting one. I'm more interested in intercooler reservoir modifications......like some type of chiller with dry ice.

DreaminAboutL,

I've heard that you don't want that cable anymore, is it true?

The disks, you don't want the disks either do you?

Anytime you just want to give that cable away just call me out. [subliminal message]give it away[/subliminal message]
