James

My helmet is full face. I dont like wearing it but since I have it on for less than a minute at a time, I figure the more protection the better.

I just bought a new helmet on Ebay. Mine was a Nolan full face, but I remember they had open face ones for sale also.

Open face helmets don't belong in race cars/trucks of any kind.

Try www.racerwholesale.com They have tons of helmets and assorted safety gear. I bought my openface last year (GForce) for about $89.00 and they threw in a bag. Dunno what the current deals are but it's worth a look-see.

Of course an old saying is an $89.00 helmet protects an $89.00 head, but in my case my $89.00 head is only using it for Solo II, which doesn't get above highway speeds...your mileage may vary

Thumbs up

I believe NHRA mandates a SNELL 95 crash rating on ALL Helmets. Not to be picky but your CHEAP helmets I doubt achieve that rating. My SHOI wasn't cheap at $250.00. But then again neither is my Brains.he,he.

Good point about the Ratings requirement. I have never seen anyone inspect my helmet but I spent a small fortune on a Bell that qualifies for almost any rating. They told me I could drive formula 1 with it. The real reason I bought it was I had very few options since my melon is large.

Before I bought the new one I used a 20 year old full face (Snell 75 ?)with all the padding rotted out and no one cared about that one either. They just wanted to see something that looked like a helmet on my head.

I just bought a snell 95 approved full face HJC with bag from www.helmetshop.com for $159. They have everything from $59 open face to $450 helmets. They carry Nolan, ARia, Shoei and several others. They also have a sizing chart and photos of each lid. Nice site and knowledgeable sales people.

Snell 95 and Full Face are required by NHRA rules this year. Last year it was Snell 95 only, no requirement as to open or full face. There are arguments both for and against both, but NHRA has spoken.

I just checked and I paid $79.50 for a new Nolan, full faced, Snell 95 rated helmet, on Ebay. I would say it wasn't a true auction since the same dealer had several listed and would probably sell any of them for the minimum price. I bid the minimum price, waited for the auction to end, and then sent them the check. Noone else bid against me.

Snell ratings also includes a "type" rating... "M" for motorcycle use, "SA" for racing use.

Snell "95 M" full-face helmets are available for $140ish on up

Snell "95 SA" helmets are available for $225ish on up. SA will be lighter, include fireproof liner, etc.

Finally, I took the shield off my full-face and I have been hit in the face with small pebbles... it hurts as much as you'd think it does. I reinstalled the shield. (for racing where the windows must be down).

I hace an old helmet with a snell 1970 rating, they let me use it "this time" but said it needs to be snell 1990 or newer.....If it was good in 1970 should be ok now, don't ya think??? It should be "grandfathered" in......... JR
