pinging and gas prices
I've had a sound that I thought may be pinging. I had wrote it off as paranoia. Well on my way home from work found 100 octane unleaded at the pump. Needless to say after putting in 4 gallons(only had a quarter tank to begin with) the pinging sound never came back. while I was driving I figured I could make a mix and get about 93 1\4 octane for about $4.00 a gallon. this is in ca. I was just wondering on average what everyone pays for premium where they're at? btw, 91 octane runs about 3.40 a gallon right now.

93 octane is 2.75 - 2.95 here in S.Jersey

More timing more power. ftw and cali ;-) hehe. Part of it is that I just spent 900$ in the last 3 months on dyno tunes with a 9 hour round trip each time. I don't mind mixing fuel for a little while until I can find another tuner. I haven't really taken a look at the xcal2. Not sure if I can pull a degree or 2 out of the program myself.

Pinging is Berry Berry Bad for the motor (we're talking REAL BAD)
Under no circumstance's do you want to hear it, if it means mixing it for now
DO IT.
Dont know if I could run on 91, they took 93 away from us a yr or so ago, and then closed almost every Sunoco here in NY (there a few left but not in my area). So it's 92 Octane Shell Only for me the last yr and it runs perfect.

What are you using, Chip or Hand Held Tuner ? and What Type ?
Either way I got to assume you have "Multi Tunes" ???
(a chip can hold multi tunes these days, the Hand Helds usually 3)
Soooooo call your tuner and simply have him give you a low octane street tune. If you have multi tunes calm the street one down, if you only have 1 tune he can take that info (he still has) and simply build you the identical program with less timing and maybe a fatter A/F. If you have a chip you can mail it to him to have it done, if you have a hand held you can do it via e-mail.

91 octane is the highest here in ca. We had 92 as of maybe 2 years ago. Besides the 100 that I found which there are only at the most, 3 stations within about 60 miles of me. Forgot about getting an email tune from my tuner. its an xcal2 so I can do that. Im frustrated because the sound I thought might be pinging was doin it before I got the updated dyno tune for the ported blower. So after I left the dyno I figured I was just hearing things. it just doesn't seem like I should be having to deal with this problem considering how much i've spent with the guy. I guess the point is that I could have popped the engine as I was drivin home from the dyno. Very bad feeling. Like I said ill probably be mixin for awhile. I may give RET a call.

How many tunes did you get for that 900.00 ???
With an X Cal you can hold "3", I hope you walked away with 3 for that $ ???
If not he SHOULD NOT charge you one more penny to give you "2" more tunes.
I would take the tune you have now and make that a race tune only (to be used with C16 or maybe the 100 octane you talk of)
Then have him send you the identical tune with 2 degrees of timing pulled, and a fatter A/F for maybe an agressive street tune, and then another one with maybe 3 to 4 degrees pulled for a SAFE street tune and 91 octane.
Give him a call, you have nothing to lose. Best of Luck and be careful

""IF"" it's unlocked ???
JDM, PSP, and a lot of the others DO NOT allow you to make changes,
you recieve your X Cal2 "locked", (in most cases I agree it should be locked)

took a look just now and it is locked, GOOD TIMES! hehe. For the $900 I got about about 9 dyno pulls and the different tunes to go with them total. Im not sure if they count those or not?!?! I just got the tunes I drove home with(2 trips 2 tunes) From what I've read that seems expensive. Especially since its pinging! I don't mind paying extra for a little piece of mind, but I don't got none. :-) I don't remember what timing its running at. but the A/F tops out at 11.8 at wot so that should be ok. with the 100 octane dilluted to about 93 the ping went away, so it shouldn't be too far off.
