Red face 2 more Vettes, two more kills :D

It was a cold dark night. I was out prowling around with my friends lookin' for trouble. We had our fun but, it was getting late, and wanted just one more race. The local hang out was waning thin, and the worthy called it a night, so I started to head home.

That was when the S10 extreme pulled up. Ever so eager to race. He knew what was going to happen just as much as I. He just wanted to see what the Lightning can do. Then his passenger starts talking. He tells a story of an LT1 Vette he has parked for the winter. He notices my smirk. And asks whats up. I really didn't have to say anything, the people I was with informed him of my several encounters with the C5 kind. He told me spring time. Well, to be a god sport, I raced(wasted gas on) the extreme and called it a night, and forgot all about the passenger.

Fast forward 3 months. Mid forties during the day, and the lack of snow this winter leaves the roads dry. I inspect my truck, and listen closely to the engine. It sounded just like rain. Hard rain. Thunder and Lightning. I knew Lightning would strike that day. Just where and when, that was the question.

I talked with the fellow that owns the nasty TSI2NV (12.04@114) '91 Talon, and we decide to meet up at the strip. Didn't even make it there and I saw an early 90s Vette with exhaust roll by. I tried to hold back, but the truck saw it before I did and followed suit. We chat on the road and he says he was the guy in the white extreme. I did not remember him at all. It took quite a bit to recall that one, but I finally remmebered. We head to the spot. I was alone, but brought the camera. And caught the light, on goes the camera.

I did my 3-5 second burnout to clean the tires, and shortly thereafter, the light goes green. I feed it slowly and had her floored by 15 mph. Through the intersection I see his front end fade to towards the rear of my truck. By 60 I put some distance between our bumpers, and we shut down in the neighborhood of 80. He never did start to reel me in. We chat at the hang-out and he's a pretty cool guy.

I did manage some footage, but its not exactly up to par for my standards to post on my site. But I do have this

90sC4.jpg

Now for the main course...(sorry, batteries died sometime last night)

Last night I also ran into the guy that owns the 00 Corvette. I didn't plan on going out again, but the I got a phone call saying he wanted to race. TSI2NV was there, and we headed out. I knew I was going to lose to the Talon, but the race was between the C5 and I.

We catch the light, I am in the far left lane, the C5 in the center, and the talon in the right hand lane. I had a camera man this time around, but little did we know the batteries were running low on electrons. The light goes green and I spin, but not nearly as bad as the C5. By this Time the Talon did his launch and we saw instant taillights. It must be nice doing 1.68 60's. I get back on the gas and I see headlights shining left and right. So much for that race. We get back to the strip, and I have to get to the airport. Why not cruise down the strip? Well, the C5 heads out at the same time, and we catch another red light. We both know its pretty much useless to run from a stop. So I suggest a 10 mph roll after the intersection. He agreed. I hit the last bump, and then punched it (then put it in drive). We both hit it pretty much at the same time. I had it manually in first, and his being an m6, I am sure he did too. Neck and neck, if anything I pull anway maybe an inch from the get go, and he gets it right back. The he shifts into second and I gain my inch back, plus a couple more. We shut down around 70 and they are saying they lost traction. Well, I'll let it slide. It was fun, and thats all I look for. It is interesting to note, however, that he wasn't pulling away before we shutdown, like the Fbodies that I run with.

I know the post was long, but its been a while since I posted a kill, let alone 2 different Corvettes. Both were black BTW. Just thought I'd give something for the new guys to read.

For what its worth, my muffler is on, and the truck is bone stock, just like the day I got it. 3 sandbags in the bed, launched at 1000 rpms or so and had it floored by 15 mph.

PS if the picture doesnt load, its on the front page of my geocites site.

Thumbs up

Tundra:
Good story, It is cool that you get that many races. Everytime I take my truck out I look for someone to race, just no one around. Then when I'm in my pathfinder there is always someone who wants to race, Go figure. Anyway keep having fun, I love reading about your kills, and I think that it is really cool that you even tell us about your losses.

Tundra,

nice to be able to find willing participants. you'd think Indy = IRL, NASCAR, USGP, US Nationals, Midgets, sprints, etc. there would be more gearheads around, nope.

FYI, geocities does not let your link to images using the www prefix. if you change it to http://fp.geocities.yadda, yadda, yadda it will work.

one more thing, how do you make one word hyperlinks?

Cool runs. These modded Talons can kill.
Whenever I post kills everyone states the same how come you get so many races. Well it helps if you know where and when to go out looking. Still I went out last night and got nothing.

A lot of times I see kill stories and wonder if some people just have very fast or very slow vehicles, or they just dont know how to drive. If you can beat a 00 C5 six speed corvette with a stock 99 Lightning you are doing well. I own a 99 Lightning and owned a 00 six speed C5. When we raced the two of them the corvette took the quarter by about 8-9 lengths. Magazine tests would seem to back up these results with C5 times about 13.3 and Lightning times about 14 flat stock. When I modded both vehicles they were closer, but the corvette still had about a good 3 length advantage. My conclusion is the corvette was a slow one, a poor driver or you have a very fast Lightning. Maybe I should have tried the sandbags in the back of the Lightning, or the corvette.

I was just as surprized as you are about the 00 C5. It was the same fellow thats on my site from a few months ago. Very inexperienced driver.

We've had 3 neck and neck races. The first was when I launched in 2nd on accident. Neck and neck up to 80, when we shutdown. Turns out he also launched in 2nd.
<A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/sdoodoo/2NDLC5.mov" TARGET=_blank> </A>

The next race was when we were racing with a 70 Chevelle SS 396. Those guys work at a machine shop. Infact the 3 of us raced twice. The first time the Chevelle destroyed me just as bad as I destroyed the C5. It took 3 spankings of the Chevelle before he saw the light and borrowed 2 sandbags. They were completely amazed at what 100 lbs can do to the launch.
<A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/sdoodoo/LChevelleC5.mov" TARGET=_blank> </A> <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/sdoodoo/LChevelleC5.mov" TARGET=_blank> </A>

Then right after that, we went to another spot and the C5 guy kept his traction control on. (<A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/sdoodoo/LChevelleC52.mov" TARGET=_blank> </A>)

The last time it was a close race, was Saturday night. from the 10-15 roll to about 60-70 mph. He did not walk away like I expected him to. He might have just started to walk away, but then shutdown.

Usually when I race my Camaro SS buddies, which are the same year, and also have the manual 6, they start to catchup at the top of second, which is about 65 or so. When 3rd comes around (70 for them), they are walking away.

Thanks Speedin Bob for the script help

Gotta go!

My conclusion would be that Tundra has plenty of experience street racing. I have watched plenty of his kills and love them

I would have to come to the same conclusion, that Tundra is a good driver. Its too bad the poor drivers give the corvettes a bad rep here on this board and the lightnings a bad rep on the LS1 boards.

Tundra and I have raced many times and he usually does take me off the line. The comparison between C5 and Lighning at the track is true in what we see at the strip between us. Ed usually gets a better launch but I catch up. We usually shut our races down at around 90 or so. I run the 1/4 mile at around 107mph so there is still plenty of room there. By 90 I'm usually ahead of him and pulling away. Would I be able to put 8-9 lengths on him by 110mph?? I doubt it. But track racing and street racing are different beasts. I'm running drag radials which I really can't use on the street. I'm not willing to smoke them for 10 seconds on a city street just to get better traction. So they offer me no advantage. On the track it's a different story.

We have run into some REALLY ****ty LS1 drivers here in town. Seems everyone buying them thinks they can drop the clutch from redline and take off, hahaha. But Ed is a very good driver and knows how to drive his truck real good. I consider myself a decent driver and I have to earn my wins with him. So throw a ****ty driver up against him and it's no contest. Another month and Ed and I will start going at it again. Gotta wait and make sure this white stuff is gone until next winter before I swap tires over.

I'd like to help you install most of your mods, but we both know it wouldn't be much of a race once half those vitamins take effect. Are you aiming for TSI2NV? I didn't think you had that many mods planned.

Last year was the Trans Am VS. Camaro shootout at the track. Not one Camaro showed up. This was just before we met. And the sponsors (Trans Ams) pulled out this year and sold his Pontiac delearship (Valley Motors)

I haven't seen the red 01 ws6 around, but I got a glimpse of some fresh meat, a white LS1 T/A. We are playing that 'I see you over there but dont care to ask to see whats up' game. If you see him, dont tell him too much. Scott said it perfect when he said both you and him have beaten me to those 2 SS's late last year. Why does everyone over estimate their driving abilities? I think you are better than decent, Scott is decent.

Nope, won't be beating Allen this year in his Talon. Atleast not if he is running 12.0x I forget what he said he usually runs, but I think I might be able to give him a good run that way. But with his boost all the way up and using race gas, he'll kill me. Now next year it might be a different story Trying to keep my warranty for the remainder of this year and trying not to have to put a cage in the car to run at the track. Next year will require a cage and no warranty. But that's ok as long as I'm down in the 11's.

I'll be sure to keep the little secret if I happen to run into those LS1 guys. Maybe I'll set the trap and tell them you're slow, hahaha. That way they want to race you because they think they're gonna woop ya, when it's really gonna be the other way around, hahaha
