MAF Question
Let's just put it this way, I have a brand new 80mm PRO-M MAF for a 99-00 Lightning and I will trade straght up for your stock 90mm Ford MAF.
I'll send you the PRO-M you can try it out and if your happy send me your 90mm and snorkle to the TB, if not send me the PRO-M back.
If you read between the lines you'll have to supply a 80mm snorkle to your TB.
BTW the thingey going down the middle of your stock MAF is the A/F reader and to some extent it impeeds the flow of air to the TB. The PRO-M reads the A/F off to the side, I really don't know all that much about MAF's and this description is MHO only. But in theory the PRO-M should make more HP if your stock MAF is poorly designed?
Let me know, if you or anyone else is interested in this offer.
Hell I'll even sell it if anyone's interested, but I'de rather have a 90mm.

I'm talking to this guy who sells performance products, and he tells me that I should buy a 80 mm MAF, I go, "well, I already have the 90mm stock, why go smaller?" He told me how there is a bar going down the middle of mine, and how that restricts air, and how I would get more horespower if I put the 80mm on. Is this true? Or is he jerking me around. And provided it's true. Couldn't I just cut the bar in the stock one? Anyways. Your opinions are welcomed.

My calculations show that the bar would have to be approximately 2 square inches in area to put the open 80mm equal in flow to stock 90mm. My recollection of the old 80mm stock MAF was a bar of approx. 0.75 sq. in.
Conclusion: Flow area is quite improved on the new MAF. Now timing and other considerations are another matter.

Marcus,
Dont change your 90MM Mass Air Meter!! Not yet anyway!
The factory meter is fine. If you cut that small tower in the meter; you will be getting a new one from you dealer. An aftermarket company would have to show me a flow chart comparing the Stock to theirs to get me to spend the cash!!
Ours do just fine! Put a Big-Mouth filter to the meter and a chip and you will kick A$$.
People who are installing the Ford 90MM on their 99-00 Lightnings are doing more harm than good! The 01 has a different transfer function in the PCM to run the 90MM. 80MM meters have a different transfer funtion. It's in the calibration. If you need additional info let me know.
The 99-00 PCM doesn't know it has a 90MM on it and doesn't know to add more fuel to the additional air from the 90MM meter. It will cause a lean condition. If the 99-00's get a aftermarket 90MM meter then they would be ok!
E-mail me on what you are doing when you get the chance.
-Dave.

Hey Thor, Can the difference in transfer functions between the stock 00 and 90mm MAF be compensated for with a chip? BTW can you describe what "transfer function" is? Eexcuse my technical ignorance!
