2001 Tires - Autocross
What do the autocross people think ?
I want to stay in F Stock, so these will be mounted on a set of the stock wheels. Oh yes, US$138 each.

That tire will not be legal in F Stock. I think you would be moved to the ESP Class (that's a bad thing) if you use the Hoosier racing tire. I'll check the SCCA classification system.
Exerpt from the SCCA Solo rule book. This is taken from the street stock section, but the same rule applies to F Stock class.
"True street tires must be used, with a minimum tread wear rating of 140. Additionally, tire models on the exclusion list below are not eligible. Tire models may be added to the list periodically through Tech Bulletins in the Fastrack section of SportsCar magazine.
Exclusion List:
BFGoodrich Comp T/A R-1
BFGoodrich G-Force R-1
BFGoodrich Drag Radial
Hoosier Autocrosser
Hoosier Radial (R3S03, A3S03, etc.)
Hoosier Dirt Stocker
Kumho V700
Nitto NT555R
Yokohama A-008 R"
IMO, the best class to run in with those tires would be SSP.

Blacklight: AWESOME! Rubber is everything in autocross (well... after the driver... who is really everything). No Airraid/JL style cone filter for stock.
Sixpipes: Those exclusions are for Street Touring aka Street Stock class only: http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/stre...rules.html#sts
The Stock class rules do not exclude any DOT legal tire. http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/car_...ules.html#s133

The specific Hoosier listed above is a race tire. See E) below. The local North Texas SCCA group will not allow race tires to be used in the stock class. I would double check with your local SCCA Chapter.
Any tire which is O.E.M. on a car eligible for Stock Category may be used. Non-O.E.M. tires must meet the following requirements to be eligible for use in Stock category:
A.
The tire must not appear on the following list, which may be altered at any time by the SEB upon notification of membership. No tire models are currently listed.
B.
No tire models will be approved for competition during the rest of the year after April 30 of each Calendar year. Each eligible tire model must meet all requirements of section 13.3 by April 30, and must continue to meet them thereafter. A tire model will normally be determined by the designation in the Tire Guide. However, any of the following changes or similar changes (as determined by the SEB) will also be considered to represent a new model for eligibility purposes, even if the designation does not change: Change of tread pattern at either full or partial tread depth; characterization by the manufacturer or distributor of a tire as "new" after April 30.
Discontinued model tires already produced will continue to be eligible for Solo II competition in Stock and Street Prepared categories. This follows years of precedence on eligibility for discontinued tire models.
If a manufacruter reintroduces a tire model which was previously discontinued, that tire will be considered a new model. Therefore, it will have to meet the rules specified in SIIR Section 13.3 including the April 30 introduction date.
Those sizes of the BFG Comp T/A R1 230 which will continue to be produced by BFG in lieu of manufacturing its successor model tire in certain diameters, will remain legal for Solo II Stock and Street Prepared use during the 1999 season.
Comment: this is to provide a specific solution to a unique situation that is not specifically covered by the current rules, in which a new tire meets the requirements of 13.3.F but the manufacturer is continuing to produce a prior model in order to meet the needs of competitors using a diameter in which the new tire will not be built. Any similar situations encountered in the future will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. (2/99 FasTrack)
C.
The model of tire must be listed in a current or previous two years of the Tire Guide and Tread Design Guide, or otherwise be approved by the SEB. The tire model must have Department of Transportation approval.
D.
Within each tire model, the sizes which are available must be equally available to all competitors. Tire model variations differing from standard specification, delivered only on a limited basis, or only to selected competitors, may not be used.
E.
No racing tire or recap (on any casing) may be used.

There are other 5.0 mustangs from somewhere in 198?-1993 in the club that run these tires and are running in FS. I have spoken with them and the tires meet B,C and D. They are not listed under A and are not considered for E since they are not slicks (at least not initially). Maybe we are a little more lenient out here in the wild west.
My hope is that the tracks have some decent straights this year

Whao... that's a very harsh interpretation of the rules. At the national level, Rule (E) applies to real "Race" tires - meaning slicks, not DOT approved. DOT approved is the dividing line. If it's DOT approved, it legal to drive on the street, so it's a street tire. Your region is classifing R-compound Street tires as Race tires.
You could protest and probably win... though I think you dont classify for stock class for other reasons

The rule of thumb around here for stock classes is the 140 wear rating. The Kumhos that I have are rated at 100. If your local club allows you to use the Hoosiers in F-Stock, that's a big advantage over the guy that shows up say on F1s.

Another old trick is to have class legal tires shaved to about 3/32" tread depth. Not the same as wearing the tires that thin.
