5.4 dohc w/ eaton...
Actually, that is a good thought.
Doesn't the Navigator have a 5.4 4-valve head? That would be the engine to start with in our Ls.
To put an Eaton on it would be costly but Kenny Bell makes a "BLOWZILLA" Screw supercharger kit, for the Navigator,(50% HP increase) with intercooler, by-pass valve that will put out up to 18 psi by changing pulleys.
NOW THAT'S A THOUGHT!!!
ADD a 100 hp shot of NOS and W-O-W!!!
Never mind!! I forgot about Traction!!

Why not put the 4 valve Nav. heads on the Lightning motor. Buy the Kenne-Bell manifold and intercooler combo and then use the Eaton or maybe even a Magnuson supercharger (it out flows the Eaton). Now you would have the looks of the Lightning motor with some good breathing heads that would let that "Iron Lung" work.

I've been on this board for almost 2 years now, and I must say that this is finally the best tread I've seen so far.
I was paging through the Ford aftermarket catalog and I saw an aluminum block ~400 ci V8 for about ~$8000 then we could slap a SC or TC/SC combo. I would guess this could produce about 600 - 800 street able/reliable RWHP.
After seeing this post I think that your suggestions are more cost efficient than mine. IMO I'm sure that my idea would produce more HP but nowhere close for the added costs involved.
I was wondering how much more HP a 4 valve head would produce considering that we’re dealing with a forced induction system. I would assume that NA engine would benefit much more than a non-NA engine would. One last idea, how much more HP can we drop in the G2’s with the current traction limitations?
Please keep up the great ideas guys we appreciate them.

BaBolt,
Is the Navigator 4-valves heads the ones you purchased? Would be nice to see someone do that project and publish some results, or find out if it was even fesible. New heads, cams and some exhaust sound like HP.

the navi heads wont work with our intake, but with a different intake manifold they would work..

then a different charger is needed
And dont forget a new hood. The navi engine wont fit according to some threads about a year ago about this exact idea. My idea was to change in the navigator engine, and the navigator AWD system. After lots and lots of discussion, I think we pretty much decided that it would be cheaper and easier to start with the AWD navigator, and put the Lightning cab and bed onto that! LOL. At any rate, I am sure that no one has ACTUALLY proven that the navigator DOHC 5.4 wont fit, but there was a lot of talk about how you cant get the eaton on the top of it and still fit it under the hood because the heads/intake are so dern tall.

What are you going to do re the gearbox. I'm not sure the extra power of a L engine combined with the weight of a Expy/Nav will be good for the stock Exp/Nav box.
Remember, with a stock L, when the low speed torque overwhelms the tire friction, it can spin and remove the stress on the box. With AWD the box is going to see alot of resistance on the drive end, with a big hammer on the engine end...
