Red face weird dood

On my way to my boat this morning I decide to stop off at my dealer and see if they have any '01s on the lot. I want to check out the fog lamps to see how they differ from mine, and check pricing and availability. I park across the street, and just as I clear the crosswalk up drives a brand new silver L. with dealer card in the front license plate bracket. The dude driving gets out, and damned if there isn't a large magetic (I think) sign on the door with the dealer name and address on it. I check and the passenger door has an identical sign. It must be 2' x 2 1/2'. I figure that's pretty classy of the dealer to use a Lightning for a parts truck, or whatever, but I don't recognize the dude as someone I've ever seen at the dealership before, and his attire is far too classy for a dealer flunky. He's in his 50s, and he's wearing an expensive suede jacket and a fedora with a pheasant feather for a hat band. Wtf? Double wtf? So I mention that this is a pretty classy truck for a dealer vehicle, and he replies that its not a dealer vehicle, its his. Then he tells me that he has two of them, this one and the only 2001 in Anchorage. I wonder if he's met Tundra, so I ask him if he ever reads this board. Catagorical no. Anyway, he starts to tell me what a bitchin' truck it is, and I tell him I know, I have one, too. He asks me what year, and I tell him 2000. He looks at me like I have leprosy and tells me that he wouldn't own a 2000, the 2001 is a vastly superior truck, with all kinds of improvements. I tell him that may be true, but my POS 2000 will beat his new '01 as it sits there. He says no way, and challenges me to race for pink slips. He asks me what my truck runs and I tell him low 13s, maybe even high 12s with what I've done to it since I ran it last. He scoffs, and proceeds to tell me that his truck will run 11s the way it sits. He says he has removed the rev limiter and increased the boost and it is making over 600 rwhp. I think about it for a second and realize that the guy has to be as full of ***** as the christmas turkey, and tell him, sure, lets go run for pinks. Then he says that he doesn't need another Lightning, he's got two already, and he's in a hurry, but he's coming back later and he'll run me then, if I want to come back. Sure, dude. Needless to say I went about my business and did not bother to go back. This dude was one strange unit. I guess that just because someone is driving an L. it doesn't necessarily mean that they are wrapped real tight. I was so taken aback that I never did inquire about the fog lamps.

Tundra's feelin' a little popular

Never met him. Only '01 in Anchorage? I haven't seen any, and when I was at the dealership, they said they had no clue when they were coming in. I know of a '00 owner, and a 99, and ofcourse Mark, in Valdez. But thats about it.

Give me about 2 weeks and I will be comparing my stock (put the muffler back on) 99 to a stock '01, since a cousin of a good friend of mine is flying down to Oregon to get his next week. Anyone want to meet up with him? I haven't talked to him about it, but he said he'll be down there for 4-5 days driving it around. He's getting a black 01. Then he's getting it shipped to up here.

We met about a year and a half ago. He had a Dodge truck, and was pretty proud of it. Then I took him for a ride in mine. Thats all it took. Just one ride, and a race with what I now know was against a newer M3.

Also, I just got back from school, the postman was just sitting in the parking lot. He was looking at my truck. He asked all sorts or questions, and loved it. I told him it was a 99, and there should be about a dozen here in Anchorage. He said he hasn't seen any other ones.

Cool

Well, I wouldn't race the dude on the street, anyway, for a number of reasons, the main one being that one more ticket and I lose my license, and I can't afford that. I wouldn't race for pinks, either, too many things can go wrong on a one shot deal, and I'm just not a high stakes gambler. If I run into the dude again I will propose that we meet at LACR Friday night and I'll run him best 2 out of 3 for $500. My guess is that he'd find some excuse to not be there, probably, in view of his prior grandiose comments, that the stakes were too small to make it worth his while.

Wow, who would have thought that removing the rev limiter and cranking the boost to 20 lbs would produce 600 HP! I guess double the boost = double the HP (give or take a few). I bet that the feather in the fedora lowers the drag coefficient as well.

I don't often laugh out loud when I am alone (They put you in a nice white room with soft padded walls for that sort of thing...) but when I read :

"walk up like your going to shake his hand, and punch him in the NutZ"

The first auto show in May (1999), it was at a local dealer in the parking lot, a guy with a pretty dirty L sat next to a sign proclaiming it to be "the only one in the city". I walked up and said: "Did you see the other one over there ? Must have just come in."

Mine was parked across the street, a LOT cleaner than his, but not to the level I thought it worthy to enter a show.

He nearly did himself an injury, dropping his jaw on his foot.

man, you should have first asked "so if you removed the rev limiter, you must be using a chip, what chip are you using?" He would probably stumble over that one. Then even if he did come back with one, say "cool, can I take a look @ your computer service port to see how they connected a chip to it?" That would have put him in his place. That way you could verify he has no chip, hence still has rev limiter, no extra boost etc..... At least thats what I would have done, just to shove that crap back @ him!
