I cant say this enough Ford wrote mercon V in the owners manual but you only want to use Mercon III

I use NAPA Mercon/Dexron III. You can also use any Mercon, Mercon/Dexron III or Dexron III fluid. Advance Auto also has a good fluid. I wouldn't pay the extra money to get Motorcraft fluid when the above mentioned fluids are the same thing.

There is no such product.

There is only Mercon and Mercon V. There has never been a Mercon III.

And as of July, there are no longer any Mercon products; only Mercon V. Ford owns the license, and it has killed it. As of July 1, no one can legally use the MERCON (no "V") trademark.

Effective July 1, the production and licensing for MERCON will cease. Automatic transmissions, power steering systems and manual transmissions previously requiring MERCON must, as of July 1, be serviced with MERCON V.

“All transmissions which recommended using MERCON ATF can now be serviced with MERCON V,” said Ron Romano, FCSD Service Lubricants Technical Expert. “MERCON V is a tighter specification which delivers better anti-oxidation, anti-wear and anti-shudder properties. It also provides increased protection against deposits, rust and corrosion. All of this helps ensure customers receive a better fluid,” said Romano.

So those of you continuing to insist -- contrary to Ford's own recommendations -- that non-V Mercon be used had better get your assess down to the store and stock up. There won't be any more made.

That's what I did. As soon as I heard that Mercon wasn't going to be produced anymore, I went to NAPA and bought 3 cases of the stuff. That should last me for quite a while considering I change the fluid about every 30K miles or so.

BTW I was at NAPA the other day and I noticed that they still stock Mercon. It's says Mercon on the bottle. It's not old stuff either because when I bought my 3 cases about 2 months ago, that was all they had left. So they got re-supplied with more and it says Mercon on the container.

The license may have applied at the manufacturing level. For instance, Ford may have allowed manufacturers to make as much of the stuff as they could before July 1, and then package and sell it off after the date. Or, it could be that the last labeled bottles left the plants on July 1, and are just getting to the shelves now.

This is what I ran into when I did some searching, I read Mercon V was a no go as well as the above that Mercon III was either never made or it was dead leaving me high and dry, so to clear this up I'm looking for Dextron III, correct?

Matt- I'm doing fine thanks, like many I'm always busy but this summer was one non stop road trip between work and weekends away, it's kinda nice to be home without plans, I'll be in touch. Todd

I've been running Amsoil ATF for over 5 years and still shifts like new. I use the truck for heavy towing and countless days on the open track. Amsoil gave me their written guarantee that it was fully compatible with Mercon and Mercon V.

Ford dealership currently use Mercon V in our transmission. Proves that the dual usage fluid was pure BS.

Well from what I have seen is the new fluids on the shelf are saying "for use in older ford vehicles requiring fluids meeting the old dexron III / mercon specification"

I think it was on the Valvoline ATF bottles, which are not suprisingly labled "DEX / MERC" LOL

Do not worry you will always be able to buy dexronIII/Mercon spec fluid.....

Call them up and ask them if they approve it for our application.

Mobil ATF and Amsoil has been used for years in our transmissions. Some say with a 20 to 30 degree drop in temps. I never measure mine before and after.
