Arrow "Calling Trace" (or "Door Cracks Revisited)

I know it was beat into the ground back in 99, but I'm bringing it back up. I've noticed that I have the door crack on my driver side and am wondering if there are any new developments on the subject.

Trace-
You seem to be the go-to gal for body shop type questions, so what are your opinions? Will they do any (real) damage of left alone? Is it worth getting it fixed, or will the paint problems cause more trouble than the hairline crack? Any other thoughts/ideas? Thanks!

I had the door crack also. I took it in and they ordered a new door. They had to switch everything over from the old door to the new one and also paint it.

I had problems with my doors today also. The interior light stayed on and the door ajar light was lit up. I closed both doors about 5 times before i gave up. About a mile down the road they both went off. Would this be related to your same problems?

Nevermind my last post. I feel stupid. The Crack in the door is in the paint. I thought you meant that it wasn't sealing propperly and you could see light through a crack.

DUCK,
Ford thought they had this problem solved...

The cracking you're seeing isn't simply a paint cracking problem. The metal is cracked as well (if not yet, it will be). Insist on nothing less than a new door. Where I worked, they tried repairing the cracks, but warranty will pay for a new door. A new door means they'll have to blend the paint into the fender and cab panel, repairing the door is less paint work, but the problem will return eventually.

I really hate it that Ford still hasn't solved this problem...

Post some pictures so everyone will know what to look for. 99 was a long time ago and there's lots of new members here since then.

Good Luck

Sorry about the late response. I've been at Mardi Gras and just walked in the door. I'm a BROKE college kid and barely have enough money for (good) beer, so I definately DON'T have enough money for a digi cam, but I found the above post in the archives and linked to it. I'll have to holler at Tomball Ford and see about a new door, but I'm not gonna hold my breath. Thanks for your imput; you're a real help.

is there any way to put something like dynamat on the inside of the door, in the area of the crack, to reduce the chance of this?

i think the crack is from the metal vibrating as you shut the door. putting a layer of that vibration/sound reducer might help out.

any thoughts on this?

Folk's,
I've been reading about all the cracked door's. I have yet to read from all these post's where the crack is forming. I've looked my 2000L over and can find no cracks yet...Lucky I suppose! Is the crack around the hinge??

The crack will be along the narrow part of the door, next to the bottom of the window. Kinda hard to explain.. above the door handle and extending out about an inch from the lower corner of the window. If you can make any sense from that, ^5.

Hopefully DUCK or someone will post some pictures.

Brooks,
I don't think that would help much. From my experiences with the cracked doors, it appears to be a weak spot in the metal and maybe even more of a design flaw. I'm certain your idea wouldn't hurt any, but I doubt it will make it any stronger. But hey, your stereo would sound better, right?

Why aren't ALL F-150s cracking like this? That's what makes it hard to understand.

Exclamation

It cracks from the stress placed on the door frame when the window is closed. Stop playing with your power windows.

I thought they all were doing it. My roommate has a '97 F150 and his has had the cracks for over two years now.

I've seen more F-150s without the cracks than with them. Ford had a bad problem with it in the 97 trucks and thought they had fixed this problem as of a couple years ago. huh.. They still won't openly admit that it's still happening, but they won't deny the warranty claim either. At least, this had been my experiences with them while working in a dealership body shop.
