Wink

Leave it all out, prop up the steering wheel with some sticks, and sit on a campstool. Talk about some MAJOR weight savings for the track!

Cool

HI!... RUSLOW : I hope your getting a custom bent roll cage done and not one of thos "TACKY" bolt in ones. Just my opinion. Go with chrome moly tubing if you can, it's a lot lighter than regular steel tubing and twice as strong. If it were my "L" I would go with a 12 point cage myself. How many point cage are you doing. I had a 12 point chrome moly cage custom bent for my PRO STREET RANGER last year. turned out real nice. If you can try to avoid the 6 inch by 6 inch plate bolted to the floor sheet metal to weld the tubing to. Our trucks are heavy and if you get into a roll over at the track or on the street (HEAVEN FORBID!) those plates will push right through the floor. Trust me I have seen it done many times. If you can take some 2 inch square box tubing and get your chassis guy to weld it from your frame to the back of your rocker panel. This will give you a stable spot to weld your tubing to. If you go chrome moly make sure it is all TIG welded because that is what is called for in the NHRA rulebook. Some tracks will also ask you to get your roll cages certified if you are running 11.99E.T or quicker. Hope this helps you out and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Sorry Neal but chrome-moly steel is not lighter than mild steel. Not unless you are using thinner walled tubing. Yes it is stronger but not practicle for roll cages. Not unless you know a good metalurgist and happen to have a heat treat/annealing ovens. Just my .02. Have built many Trans-Am/Gt chassis and never used chrome-moly in the cages.

Silver-Bolt!!
What are you talking about???? Chrome-moly is lighter than mild steel due to the fact that you are able to use thinner wall tubing. What makes you think it is not praticle for roll cages?????? Chrome-moly happens to be the mandatory requirement for all roll cages wanting to meet anyone with any kind of real horse power! Like a 300+MPH Top Fuel Dragster, 1300+HP Pro Street car or anything else with some real HP. Motorsports sanctioning bodies such as NHRA, NMCA, NMMRA,IRHA, NASCAR, ARCA, SSCA... and so on.... mandate chome-moly for chassis fabrication!!!!! And you do not have to have a good metalurgist or have a heat treat/annealing ovens. As far as you never using chrome-moly for your Trans-Am/Gt chassis? Well I hope the fools that you built them for do not crash and burn! I apologize for my rudeness but I just can not stand it when someone offers their opinion on something they nothing about. Neal, everything you mentioned is right!!!!

Question

I think Silver-bolt is talking about the weld area cracking under stress if not done properly, i.e. with heat treating.

But does that mean that everyone with a simple welded moly cage is gonna die in an accident?!

I'm confused...

You are correct that thinner wall tubing would be lighter. I am refering to same thickness. As far as construction goes unless you are VERY skilled you are in danger of making the material brittle. It is not as forgiving as other materials. Grab your self a copy of the latest SCCA or better yet FIA or NASCAR rule books. Unless the rules have changed from last year there is no mandate for chrome-moly in the cages. I completely agree with you on the strength of the material. I do however disagree with you as to the application. Frame rails yes, cages noway. Now I am not talking about general purpose tubing. I am refering to cold rolled seamless tubing. As far as the chassis I have built they all have be very competitive cars top 5 in T/A and several divisional champs in GT1. This is not some back yard hack shop. The cars are completely computer designed. Solids modeling and stress analisis done before any metal is cut. We have the ability to do stress analisis testing on various materials. And yes I have had the unfortunate experience of seeing 2 of the cars destroyed. Both drivers walked away uninjured. I would never build anything that was a compromise in the safety of the driver. My point is that different applications require different materials.

HI!... I'm not trying to start a flame here or anything but all I can say is that I would never drive a 11.99E.T or faster "DRAGCAR" with out a chrome moly tubing roll cage. My chassis builder told me that you can go thinner wall thickness on chrome moly tubing because it will be just as strong or even stronger in some instances than way thicker plain steel tubing. The NHRA demands that all chrome moly cages be welded with TIG welding only, not ARC or MIG. Our dragstrips around here are very strict on this. That's why they want you to sonic test the wall thickness of the tubing when getting the cage certified. It might be different rules for NASCAR but in dragracing that's the rules. Pick up a NHRA rulebook and read it.

By the way my chrome moly tubing on my RANGER's 12 point roll cage is seamless and weighs almost 45LBS less than a steel 12 point roll cage.

I personally don't care if I save 45# the truck weight is almost 4700 now and the type of events I do the added weight cna be useful at keeping something a unareodymanic as these on the ground.Plus I have a hard enough time finding someone to do some of the speciality work that I require in the WHOLE USA let alone weld a moly cage correctly.I do plan on using floor plates but am also thinking of reinforcing to the frame. But will have to see when the inside is done as to what I NEED to do to the structure to get the greatest benefit from the added protection.
Finished to halo hoop and rear bar going to work on the forward bars and the door bars as soon as the time allows.Need to get to the machine shop for them to Wire EDM a few items for the cage.
The tubing that I am using is 2" DOM .120,to bend it I weigh 180# and I HAD to use a 6' bar to bend it on a JD squared bender.Think it will be strong enough for a vehicle traveling 175 to 180,and weighing 4700#?
