Exclamation On board video test

Prior to my day at Laguna Seca, I ordered some parts so that I could capture onboard sound and video. They didn't arrive until one month after the day. But, I've finally got good mic locations and have adjusted the gain so the sound is adequate. I've fabricated one part to hold the camera and placement in multiple locations should be easy.
Later this week, I'll mount the camera in the gap between the radiator grill and front bumper and test that location. I'd do it sooner, but we're getting a puppy this week so, there are many other priorities.

Here are two links of video captured just above the receiver (rear bumper).

Both movies are Quicktime. The first part of the clip is a rolling start onto a freeway and backing off just prior to the 2-3 shift. The second portion of the clip is similar but I backed off completely prior to the 2-3 shift.
The new TB from BaBOLT has increased the low end power so much that I don't know how to launch it yet - even rolling starts require an easy foot, or the tires spin.

Larger image and slightly better sound:
6.1 MB file

Smaller image for slower connections:
2.0 MB file

The video quality isn't the greatest on these for two reasons. There was more vibration at mount I tried - that will be fixed by mounting directly to the receiver or the ball mount. Also, some information is lost during the analog to DV conversion (for internet creation). The quality off the tape is VERY clear.

If there is enough interest in this setup, I'll make more.I'm also testing a keypad so you can switch camera views in the cab.

I emailed Tundra a long time ago regarding this - before I got the parts. I email him tonight.

The cool thing about this setup is that you latch your camcorder to the center seatbelt, or passenger belt. Hopefully, this setup would be legal at a Drag Race or a road course. I figure that if a camera attached to a cage using a small 1/4" bolt and a locknut is good enough for safety checked, a camera attached to locked seatbelt is just as safe. But I don't know yet.

When you want to record, press record. When you're done, press stop. Plus, without a passenger, you're quicker!

The camera can be mounted wherever you want it, as long as it's secure and won't vibrate excessively - the camcorder will take care of stablization. I've mounted the camera in the cab, on the cab, on the rear bumper (three different locations), and later this week, the front grill.

Although the video posted was somewhat bumpy on the first clip, it's better than actual. For those who have driven highway 24 through Lafayette, they know how rough the road is.

It would be cool if you could have your speed on the screen kinda like cop car cameras.

I've thought adding telemetry to the video display: RPMs, speedo, gear. Add an accelerometer and you could also get G forces. Give it about 1 to 2 years and my guess is that it will be affordable to add a ghosted image of this data, realtime, to the display.

Let me get this correct. Do you have a video camera inside your truck recording a video source from a remote camera on the outside connected by a cable. I've got a Sony digital 8mm camcorder. What kind of inputs does my camcorder have to have to do this. I'm a bit confused.

I have a Sony camcorder also. If your camera has video and audio jacks, the jacks work in both directions, i.e. not only can you hook it up to a TV and watch what's on the tape, but you can hook it up to the TV and record what's on TV.

With that in mind, if you hook up a "camera" that captures video and plug that into the video jack on the camera, and plug a microphone into the audio jack, the camcorder (when in VTR mode) will display whatever the "camera" is pointed at. When you press the record button(s) the video is recorded on tape.

The camera I'm using is waterproof and is about the size of your thumb. Thus, it can be mounted almost anywhere. In fact, the next time at a road course, I will duct tape it to my helmet - instant helmet cam!

Got it. I'm gonna' email you with some questions if it's ok. I'd love to get some footage riding my snowmobile full-on; and be able to get some dragstrip video too.

Wow, you sure have improved from just the helmet cam!

Keep up the good work and the fellas at NASCAR will be calling asking for advice. Thats really cool.

Cameras the size of thumbs? you can mount one on a mirror, or something. Geez, I suddenly feel like just another guy with a camera. I am gonna try to download those videos now. If you get a personal website with Lightning movies, be sure to let me know, I'd like to link to it.

anonymouslightning,
I have no idea whats wrong with geocities, I'll have to do some more thinking before I get them up.

The videos would have been more clear if it was still light out. Take a look and you will see headlights in the videos. It wasn't dark yet, but dark enough for other drivers to turn on their headlamps.

I had some videos ealier in the day, but I forgot to turn on the microphone (line amp), so there wasn't any sound. I did a quick drive before it got dark so I could post these videos.

Tundra:
When I get more videos, I'll email and post the link. As of now, the quicktime directory on my server has one Lightning video, and two videos of my dogs, set to Stevie Ray Vaughan and our new puppy (set to Susan Tedeschi).
