Question Newbie -- purchase and mod Qs

Hi all,
I'm looking into an '01 L purchase. Any issues with them I should know about? I'm getting black, and swapping the tails for standard red ones. I've gotten a dealer to $500 over MSRP -- this seems high to me. Any place or tricks to get better prices? (I'm in the SF Bay Area). And how about mods once I get it? If you can tell from my sig, I don't like to leave things stock... Thanks for any introductory stuff....

Do a SEARCH on any topic. We've discussed almost every topic, some several times. Also look in the FAQ section.

I was deliberately trying to leave it fairly open-ended, but I have done some homework, so here's more targeted questions:

$500 over MSRP - good, bad or ugly for SF Bay Area on an '01? Any specific advice on good/bad dealers, buying out-of-state, or online dealers (carsdirect, driveoff, etc)?

Issues I'm aware of: front clunk, breaking foglights, leaking intercooler -- any of these fixed for '01 or what should I do? Any other common issues?

Mods: I do wanna tow, which rules out some things, but it seems chip, some sort of cold/ram-air intake are the 2 most popular. What about TBs, exhaust, shift kits, other mods? How effective are they, and who are the best providers for all these things?

Better focus?

Presumably the I/C leak is taken care of in '01. But who knows? You'll find out within a year or so.

The intercooler should be fixed on the 01's. Different design, anyway. Don't know about the clunk, but that is a ridiculously easy fix- 2 50¢ star washers. Lots of people bought their '00's for MSRP or less- with steepening gas prices not that much demand for a vehicle that gets 10 mpg. Don't know how far you want to go, or how much your time is worth, but there's a dealer here in Ventura who will sell you one for MSRP. Go out of state and I'm sure you could find one for less.

Only time will tell if the new intercooler is leakproof, it is suposed to be better.

As far as the 2001's being chipped we will have to see.

As far as ram air, throttle bodies, shift kits, and lower blower pulies there should be no problem. If they fit on a 99 or 2000 they should fit on a 2001.

As far as a good place to get these I would say JDM is one of the best, Talk to Spiro he can help you out.

Which dealer did you go to? Fremont Ford is offering them at MSRP and still has approx. 20 available to order as of last weekend. This is a lot better than the "other" dealer in San Jose offering them at $3k over MSRP.

Go through the internet and the Fleet sales guy at Fremont Ford will contact you http://www.fremontford.com/. I purchased a 2000 last April and even though Fremont was out he turned me on to Varsity Ford in Palo Alto and I still cut a good deal. Shamrock Ford in Dublin which is close to where I live wanted 6k over MSRP.

You can also consider buying it over the phone in an other part of the country and having it drop shipped to a dealer near you. I bought my 2000 L for about $3,500 under MSRP. They seem to be cheaper in Ohio than California or Texas. You can call 1-800 fordsvt to get a list of SVT dealers in Cleveland, and start shopping by phone. I did this last January, and the first time I talked to the salesman face to face was to sign the purchase agreement.

Not sure which color you are interested in, but I forgot to mention that Fremont has a white 01 Lightning from a cancel order. According to the dealer, they should have it in this week.
