Cool Gen 1 Knowledge is needed.(URGENT!)

A buddy of mine wants in the Lightning group and found a sweet looking 1993 Lightning. So tomorrow I'm going out to look at it. What should I look/listen for?? What's a good price. Also, it has aroudn 144,000, will the truck hold up for a while without needing a major overhaul?? Any good mechanics in the Southern California area? Or anyone that has a Gen 1 around here that knows what to look for??

Last summer, there was a nice black one for sale. It was a 94 I think, heck not sure anymore. But it had 83k miles on it, and At first he wanted 10 grand. If I remmeber right, that was when people were advertising them Outside (Alaska for lower 48) for 12-12.5k. Last day it was there it had $7500 written on the window. It was a very clean truck, too, non-smoker, the guy knew what he had.

As all of you should know by now, posting something like this on the NLOC board will give a ton more answers with accurate information. I'm no longer affiliated with the NLOC and not trying to steal anyone away from here, but there really is a larger population of the Gen 1 guys. It's where I would look for any information about the Gen1 trucks.

Those trucks are pretty reliable. basically check the front end out and overall condidtion. If the motor runs smooth and doesnt smoke on start up,It should last quite a while.I friend of mine who had one beat it pretty well but maintained it,She got 130k out of it and it was still runnin 14.9s stock so These must be pretty good.
If it is a real real nice truck,it should be worth 8-9k NO MORE You can find them with lower miles for the same $$.I will tell you though(believe it or not) Sometimes the ones with the higher mileage are the better onse to get.In the used car business,You see alot. What i notice the most is the 70-90k mile cars always need tons of work but people think cause thay are "low mileage" they are better off.Even though its nervous buying high mileage,You usually have better luck if its a nice clean truck. If Its got high mileage and is beat ,its not worth buying at all. You cant make a horse out of horse*****.

I was driving through town one time in my L when I noticed a a really rough on, so he pulled over and we talked..He ended up having 325,000 miles on his L.

Trace is right on, I frequent(along with the majority of Gen1'ers) NLOC much more than F-150online.

But for reference, check the tranny(beat it once or twice) it'll probably shift like crap, I know my mint 93 did/does. Also check the rear main, as windsor's have a problem with that(that Trace know's a cure for), then the rest is just going over the truck with tooth and comb and making sure it's all in good mechanical condition..

Just as a reference I sold my White 95 Lightning with 40K on it for $16,000 back in Sept.

Some trucks still sell for good money!

Thanks all for the help, I told my friend to check out this site, and the NLOC site. Today we will probably go take another look at the truck and see if we can get a grand or so knocked off since it needs a new tranny.
