Call it a draw with a turbo supra
Driving home from work late Sunday night. Not looking for anything, very light traffic (around 10PM). Up ahead I see soomething that looks like it might be a sports car by the taillights. I first thought it was an F body, but as I got closer, it was some import.
Pulled alongside and it is a shiny red toyota supra. I match his speed (about 5 mph less than I was going) and turn off the OD. Truck revs up a bit, with that nice exhaust rumble. I look over and the guy isn't noticing me.
I bump the gas to jump forward and match him again, no response. One more time and this time he matches me. I speed up a little, he does too. We are doing around 70 when he gets on it. I get on it too, we shoot off at full speed. He can't pull on me as I run out of 4th and go into overdrive.
Single car in his lane, so he pulls in behind me right on my bumper (I slowed when we passed the other car) We get back into it and I pull over into the middle lane to let him have a lane. We both get back into it and this time I have to slow for traffic (we were going upwards of 125 or more). Duck in behind him and I see puff of smoke as he hits it hard (a little rear end squat helped confirm). I stay right on him (no gain or loss) as we clear 130. No traffic at all, but we are going into some curves in the interstate.
Going into the first good curve, he hits the brakes some. I just lift the gas a bit, and catch up and pass by half a length in the curve. He is obviously upset and gets back into it. Comes even with me but slows more in the next curve. I lifted a little more this time (road is bumpy in that area) and he edges me out. Pull straight again but is my exit. I have to get on the brakes hard to make it across the lane to my exit.
I think he may be in shock right now because of how hard it was to goad him into the run. He probably thought he was going to show this "guy in a truck" some quick tail lights. Not only that, but I'm sure he was confused when I passed him in the curve at 100+. I am pretty sure a Toyota Supra Turbo can outhandle the L with equal drivers, but I guess maybe my time in performance driving school helped. Who knows, maybe he was just scared.
Fun run, but this aerodynamic situation sucks for us Ls.
