Post Giving reg F150 the L treatment..need advice

I have a 1998 F150 flareside and already put on the L ground effects and the interior and all. I was wondering if it would accept my crate GT-40 engine I had planned on dropping into my mustang. If so what other mods would I have to do to make it work. If not what could I do to make it get close to the HP of the L..BTW its a 4.6. Also Would it be possible to make RECARO seats fit into my F150?? One more thing...How low can I lower it without it starting to scrape and bottom out on every single bump??
Thx for all your help in advance

well..uhhh I have alot of spare time and instead of just buy a L I figured I would build something unique instead of be "just like everyone else". Besides I dont think the 360HP is enough for me. With my crate GT40 I make about 350HP and with a SC I could easily dip into the 480-510 marker.

Why don't you talk to crash, he has a lot of experiance suppercharging the 4.6 engine. Putting in a GT 40 engine into a 98 F150 would take a lot of work. The electronics alone would be a pain in the butt.

If you fix up your 98 pickup -- you will have that a fixed up 98 pickup --- Kelly Blue Book lists a 98 150 with no options and 25,000 miles at about 15,800 --- a crate motor is about 2700, a supercharger is about 3000, and you can have a real '99 lightning for $26,000 or less --- and you would not be out the agrevation of trying to get your truck to run like a lightning . . . . . .

How can you call, taking a reg. F-150 and trying to make it into a Lightning "unique?"

But like it was mentioned above, you'll run into a lot of problems, with electrical being just one of them. And I'm not sure, but is the 4.6 tranny, the same as the 5.4 s/c? Or can it handle a s/c motor putting out close to 510 Hp??

z96cobra,

I thought we were being nice!
Having done frame up restorations on 6 shelbys, 1 Boss429, 1 SS Camaro, and Two Vettes, I was not prepared for the first time I built a custome Vette, and it did not have all the computers that we are talking about here.

If I knew then what I know now, I would never have built a custom car!

Cool

It works like this. I bought a nice little F150 for $17.5 and started "playing" with it
and now have about $32.5 in it with no regrets. It is no Lightning, not even close. It is however, a unique F150. You cannot build a Lightning for $30.0 so If you want a lightning then you should buy one. Had I bought a lightning for $30.0 then I would probably have at least $40.0 in it by now. If you want a unique F150 then go for it, if you want a Lightning performing truck then buy a Lightning!

you will need the transmission out of a powerstroke f350 to handle that much power if you want to be safe.

and we shouldnt make fun of these guys for wanting a lightning.

think about we all have the trucks everyone wants and that should make you feel special.

i had a friend that turned his 98 f150 into a lightning about 3 months ago and everyone on the board took turns in making fun of him.

Svtaudio is his username.
the truck looks great too.
alot of people had a problem with it too about being soo slow.
well theres a problem there.
he actually beat my 99.
its got a procharger supercharger and a 100 shot of Venom nox. and a superchip and a few other things.

it is well over 400hp.

so lets give em all some credit. "for trying to be like us"

2000SilverNavigator,You are right on about the transmission not holding up and another alternative is to have a performance rebuild of the 4R70W from a reputable company. Different input shaft, clutch packs, torque converter, etc.. To clarify a few things, I am not trying to be a "lightning owner" or trying to be like anyone. I am not trying to "build" a lightning clone or copy. What I am trying to do, and having a ball at, is build a unique Ford F150 regular cab pickup truck!

Svtguy84,
I'll just touch on a few points and take from it what you will!!

You will need to get an engine, body and trans harness,PCM and a built trans from a 1st gen L to do it right. IMHO, it will save time. You will have to get wiring schematics for both trucks. Then a crap load of cutting and splicing. You have the under the dash wiring to splice into and fuse panel. You have frame mods for the engine and cross member for the trans also a custome drive shaft if your placement of the engine and trans is not measured right!! Much to consider taking on this project!!

If you do it, it would be cool!! I've seen a small block V8 ford race engine fit in an XR4Ti built by Carl Holbrook. If that can work anything can!! Good luck!!

If you can find a
