NEW COBRA R IS REALLY JUST A SHOW CAR
The Fox chassis has been around since dirt. Ford keeps adding braces and patches, but it's basic design hasn't changed since '79. There is more money in catering to the 'ricer' crowd with the Focus, hence the FR200. The Focus is now the 'cheap performance' car of choice for Ford. If and when a GM ponycar takes a significant cut of the market, Ford will come out with something more competitive.
I think Ford can do better with their current resources, but they are too busy with Jaguar, Volvo, Aston Martin, Rover, etc.
Eventually this technology will filter down to the 'Ford' cars. In the meantime they make certain that they don't produce a car that may intrude on their 'premium' brands territory. Can you imagine a Mustang that had the same performance as the XR8, and a radio and AC at the same time...sheer heresy!

For those who've rebutted that the R is a road course car and should be judged as such, i'd refer you to Car & Driver's duel in the desert where all three were put through the paces. I, like all other Ford fans, was hoping for a strong showing, but it just didn't happen.
the R is a road course car, and nevermind the magazines....i read in another major comparison of the 3 cars , that the cobra R SMOKED the z06 and viper badly in a road course. i believe the R won by over 2 seconds a lap on the z06 and even more on the viper. it may have been road and track, but i forget, it was a summer issue, maybe july or august. sorry i forget the exact name of the publication. anyway you can't go by one magazines test results.

It says that they made a car to run with the amazing Viper GTS, false statement right there, it runs high 12s, GTS runs about 12.1-12.2, it would be ok if it didnt have that shopping cart wing on it, its too squared..

Hello.......McFly.....Ford made Fox body platform automobiles through the 1993 year...they were SN95's after that...jeez
I had one of those 1989 5.0 hardtop coupes...try to find one today..they make the best damn affordable drag cars on the market..they weight 2900 pounds..and with..yes the correct braces...are stiff as hell....what the hell is wrong with braces?...everyone in racing braces their superstructures one way or another..who the hell wants a "Limp Bizkit"...even girls like them stiff sire...sorry for being "politically correct...LOL"
Boris Said took his "FOX BODY HARDTOP" to win his division in the Silver State Classic..that road rocket was hitting nearly 190 SIRE...so tell me about it....
Boris drives NASCAR trucks now...

Another thing you might think about with the Cobra R compared to the Z06 vette and the Viper. We are talking a metal bodied, production framed sports car that they take into the competition level with good performance against two fiberglass skinned supercars. I bet a composite of fiberglass bodied Cobra R would be a tad bit faster all around.
Just my thoughts on a difficult apples to oranges discussion in some ways.

WhiteLightnin', the SN95 body rides on a derivative of the Fox platform--the Fox 4. It is heavier because of the various bracing employed to reduce the flex of the original Fox platform, and wider to accomodate the crash beams in the doors. I've owned nearly every model mustang since '67 (except the Mustang II), and I am a sincere Mustang fan, so I'm not just talking trash.
When Ford made the SN95 chassis in 94-95 it still had the 5.0L engine because they couldn't find an inexpensive way to put the 4.6 in between the shocktowers, (that plus they were making more money putting the SOHC in Crown Vics.) The suspension pickup points on the 79-01 Mustangs are almost identical. You can even retrofit the new IRS into the older models with some very minor mods. The K-member, spindles and brakes have been changed to add Ackerman effect and caster, but the basic parts and design are still the same.
I'm not saying the cheap mods Ford has made to the Fox platform don't work...my '99 Cobra was a quantum leap over my older Mustangs in handling, but If I closed my eyes, I could swear I was back in my '82 GT at times. Ford was going to change the chassis back in '87, but Mustang fans protested the change to front-wheel drive--thus Ford kept the Mustang, and named the new car the Probe. Until the change is made to the DEW(Lincoln) platform in 03, no significant changes to the chassis are projected. For more info, check out http://www.fordheritage.com

he's right, the sn95 mustangs are fox-4 cars, they just aren't known as fox bodies for obvious reasons.
i own a 93 gt and love it, but it shakes and rattles like a bitch over bumps and during hard acceleration. nothing beats fox 5.0s as far as i am concerned however, totally kickass cars during their era as kings of the muscle cars of the 80s. (as far as major production muscle cars go).
