You gotta read this
I take my hood to the body shop(ive never used them before,My body guy is done for the winter so the owner says??!!)
I give him the hood and he says he needs my truck.I ask why? he says in order to match it perfectly,he needs to blend it in on my fenders.OUCH!!! I went home grabbed my tailgate and told him to match it to that! "YOU AINT TOUCHIN MY FENDERS!!" I hope I did not make a mistake bringing it too him,ill find out friday. he insisted over and over to paint the edge of the fenders too.
Im picking it up friday and IM going to install it.He aint touchin my fenders!!!

Quick:
Somebody's blowing smoke up your a$$...
A good body shop can tint it correctly without leaving the vehicle.
Sounds like he wanted to test drive.

I think "matching" paint is only needed if the car is old and its paint is faded... if so, painting a new body part with "virgin" paint (per the factory paint code) wont match the rest of your body.
So unless your L is Red and has been parked outside in the Arizona sun for the last 2 years, you'll be ok (with virgin paint).

If yours is Silver he is correct, they will need to blend the fenders. It is extremely hard to match silver paint, even varying the paint gun air pressure will change the shade.

My truck is white.I think what he was worried about is the fact that the body is steel and the hood is fiberglass. Paint code yz. From my experience,This specific paint code is pretty easy to match. When i had a scratch on my 99 white Lightning ,MY GUY blended it perfect and you could not tell. This guy has me scared but if it is wrong,I will put up a stink.Hes gonna end up charging me 300 and if it does not match pretty dam good,he will not get paid until it matches.I also heard that the longer between base and clear the tint changes.
The other body shop i went to wanted to spray just a 1 stage paint. He is well know but i dont think that is right,Sounds like the easy way out.
I dont think he wanted a test drive because he did not even know what a lightning is.Thought crossed my head at first though.Come on its white and its new,Cant be that hard?
Did you guys have the undrside cleared?I told him to leave it just base coat seeing the rest of the underside is not cleared. My friends silver aad f1 hood (my old hood)is done this way and looks factory. Now I gotta wait to get my gauge pillar and the cosmetics are done.
Not to much not too little ,just right
ill take pictures this weekend and will post them seeing not many have ever seen a aad hood on a white Lightning.I bet is looks great and has the best contrast.

Blending is a necessary procedure in some cases. Necessary here, no. Two stage paint, YES! I would even have the underside clear coated so it's easier to clean. (I wax the underneath of my hood and inside my door jams).
A Dodge Ram hood repainting would require blending since the hood rolls over to the fenders and a mismatched color would be obvious.
Tinting the paint to match is always a good idea. The color can be off from the factory. I bet if you took your door off and put someone else's door on (from a similarly kept truck of the same year and color) there would be a noticeable difference.
Thanks for listening.

This last spring when I bought our Expedition and had the Lightning front bumper/clip installed/painted, the body shop took the gas cap cover and used that to match the paint. And our Expy is silver and the match is perfect.
I think the quality/capability of the body shop is the most critical thing in any paint/repair process.

Hey Lightningquick,
Another body shop I've used and highly recommend is 128 Auto Body Collision Center in Wakefield, MA. Paul Kelley (781-245-4888)
is a friend and has done lots of work for me. 1st class shop, state of the art equipment and paint products, most employees are motorheads and wicked perfectionists. Hanson & Tilton also very good. Grew up down the street from them and hung around there after school as a kid. They specialize in high end insurance work (MB, BMW, Porsche). Good Luck, ED

I love your body man. That's what we use to call an indian feather job. Back in the old days the paint faded more than today and when something got painted you would feather it into the old paint so it was not noticeable. I don't know where the name came from, but that's what my old body man called it.

No,i do not know rowe but I know where he is on batchelder rd.Been there for years.I used to live on folly mill rd. salisbury 1/2 mile away. That road is where i used to do mt burnouts.
Jonny balwin.First of all,I agree,he is one of the best painters i know of,i did not know he was still around,He is also very laid back and a nice fun guy,I was 17 and I wanted to have my car painted. While i was at corvette center,The guy told me about johnny next door.Johnny ended up painting my 89 mustang GT.He changed it from black to white for $900 and he did an exccelent job.I ended up working for him for a few months. What is so funny is he paid me to work but instead we just used to go to lunch all dat at (spuds i think). He could never get anything done. There was a resto job in the shop for over two years and did not even get block sanded and doors aligned until i was there. It was so funny to work(eat) there
We would go out for a 5 hour lunch breaks and on top of getting paid to work,He bought be what ever i wanted to eat.best job I ever had!LOL This was at a time he had a (little) boozin problem but was a truly nice guy.You shouls see the jeep he did back then,oh my god,it looked better thn factory. This was right around the time that the owner of the park was buyinh the bowery and turn it into the famous TENS show club. This guy used the middle buliding as a wood shop. All nice people.Matter of fact,I see the guy from corvette center at autions all the time now.He just seriously got back into buying /selling cars again. He used to be the main man for 5.0 parts!
dammit,If I knoew johnny was still around,i would have had him do it
