Post Chip & Plugs!

I am thinking of purchasing a chip for my 2000 L. However I read on another post here today about problems with surging pinging etc. I believe Spiro said something about changing out the stock platinum plugs. Is that nessasary? Have you guys with performance chips changed the plugs? I believe it is a real pain to do so. Please let me know.

I don't know that use of a chip is really relevant to changing the plugs. Most supercharger manufacturors, including Eaton, recommend against using platinum plugs with their products, chipped or not. A number of people on this board have switched to the Splitfires, and swear by them, although I don't put that much faith in SOTP testing. I have a Swanson chip in mine and I am pleased with it. Runs fine on CA gas, no pinging. Some have reported bigger performance gains with some other chips, but I guess they are tuned to the ragged edge because many report pinging. I would rather be a little conservative since the L. is my daily driver. I am running the NGK plugs in it. Seems to run fine, even with leaky intercooler. Only caveat is that they need to be changed more frequently than platinums. Expensive to have someone else do it, and a pain in the **** if you do it yourself.

Hi Hilander,

You shouldn't have any problems with surging or pinging with a good performance chip. You can find on occasion that in a particular geographic area the fuel formulations will be such that they cannot support certain combustion chamber conditions (from a lower energy content, not an octane problem), so if an adjustment is needed to compensate for fuel quality, that can easily be done. Most have no such problems with the Superchip.

We test in numerous areas of the country prior to releasing any program for these Lightnings especially, due to the variations we have seen in fuel quality over the past couple of years with the Fed's air quality monitoring campaign. For example, testing in California is mandatory, as their 92 octane premium tend to be a bit lower in energy content compared to other areas of the country, so that's an obvious area where testing prior to release is needed.

We have also seen a few Lightnings that just responded differently, for example we had a customer in the DFW area of Texas, a very nice gentleman who was getting some detonation with his R9 Superchip, and he got together with a couple other friends with Lightnings in that area, and they all ran the same gas, and the same Superchip. 2 of the trucks never detonated, yet one did, all with the same gas & same Superchip. So we can find that some of these Lightnings are not 100% consistent in this regard.

The bottom line is that very few Lightnings have had any such problems with the R9 Superchip, but should a problem come up, it can be adjusted for you to compensate. If you'd like to go over this in greater detail, please feel free to give us a call.

Good luck with your Lightning!

I have both the Super R9 and Swanson's. I LOVE my R9. No pinks, no pops, no nothing but fun.

Also, I run NGK's

LTNBOLT,
I noticed that you and ib fast are running the splitfires why do you prefer these over other plugs!Have you pulled any plugs to see how they are burning?I am thinking about trying these plugs in my L. I am currently using the ngk tr6 plugs without any problems now,but when i had my pro-m on with chip calibrated for pro-m my truck would detonate with the ngk's installed but they did not detonate with platinums!I was really surprised about that!I went back to my stock mass-air and installed the JDM Chip and that combo is working out great!

I hesistate to bring this one up, but, what about the rare issue of the chip "erasing" the EEC? I have seen this mentioned a couple of times...

HIGH ROLLER,

We like the Splitfires because there is a noticable difference in throttle response. I put them in before I had a chip. Launching I could burn the tires from a dead stop but that was about it. I installed the splitfires and I could floor it at 10-20 mph smoking the tires. It was quite noticable. Ibfast had a chip and went from smoking the tires to fishtailing.

I've checked mine several times. They burned a medium tan before the chip and a dark tan after the chip. It was just barely enough to notice a change in color. The stock plugs burned black at the base of the electrode and dark brown toward the end. I have pics on my website. The splits burned nice and even where the stock plugs were all over the place.

MRBBQMAN is running then with spray.

BTW, chips at JDM for reburn. Spiro is going to send it back with the pulley.
