Question Trooper Camero's ?

The news this week is the the NC State Troopers are getting 100 Camero's with the 'Vette engines capable of 159 mph top speed. Any of you guys in states that the police are currently using these cars know anything about the hosepower of the engine they use and what transmission.

Are the unmarked Camero's as easy to spot as the Crown Vic's. Would hate to go to jail for picking a race with one. The old Mustangs they used to use were faily easy to spot on the highway. Maybe they will load the Camero's with antennas.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol uses the Camaro on the turnpikes, sometimes see them on the highways. All are marked and have a couple of big antennas on the back. I know Oklahoma City uses unmarked crown vics and suburbans but haven't noticed any unmarked camaroes. I've seen a OK HiPo's w/ a Trans Am and a corvette too.
before you try to race one w/ dark tint and a big antenna check out the plate - have gov't plates.
I don't know the power stats on them. but I bet they have auto trannies.

Texas DPS (state troopers)also use Camaros. They are painted black and white, but many don't have a light bar on the top. The police package Camaros use the same 305 HP LS1 that's in the Z28. They are available with either the A4 or M6 transmissions.

Cool

Just gotta remember if all the Police, State Troopers only had MoPeds you still can't out run them. Radio waves travel at the speed of light and no way are you gonna beat them, if that was your plan.

I know this has nothing to do with HP ratings just a thought.

These are trouble here in New Mexico. I have seen a light purple one, no light bar. The only reason I knew it was a patrol car was because it was at the scene of an accident. It was sitting there with it,s lights flashing. These sure are hard to spot.

Dude I hate those damn camero's. They are such a pain to spot cause now they use the LED super bright bulbs so they don't need allot of them. I pull up to those guys once in while. Unmarked and hard to see. Mostly grey and white camero's though.

I passed one going through indiana this summer and could not tell it was a cop until i was within 150 ft.if this guy did not have someone pulled over you would never know he was a cop.not sure what color this camaro was but it looked stock and i can just piture someone trying to catch him on the interstate to race.

What you guys are describing is exactly what I was afraid of, that they would be hard to spot on the open road. Oh well, I guess we L owners in NC will have to start checking Camero tags and look for antennas.

Jamstro:
I just didn't want to pick a race with one of these by mistake. Would never even consider trying to outrun one. Thanks for the info. Still curious about the powertrain in these cars.

Cool

They showed a Z chasing down a 5 series Bimmer on that Police Chase show. They were both doing over 135. The narrator idiot said they have a "special" computer from the factory that gives them more power. The cop finally pulled up next the the guy, he tried to motion the guy to pull over. The guy in the BMW acted like he was gonna ram him and the cop over-reacted and slid the car into the median. It slid sideways for a while, hit a big drainage backdrop and flew (still sideways) through the air for about 30 feet. It landed, the rear end came around and it rolled nose first back across the road. A Crown Vic still chasing at about 130 missed the car by about 6". Then it kept rollin across both lanes and kinda crunched into the guardrail in the breakdown lane as about 5 more troopers flew by and almost took off the rear of the car. The BMW broke down not too long later. One of my favorite chase videos

Hey Jarmstro,

Regarding radio waves traveling at the speed of light (c), that's only true in a vacuum. The only place where a vacuum truly exists is in front of the L's S/C air intake when boost > 8.0 psi, and in the epicenter of the vortex in the fuel tank.

Since these radio waves are propagating through a medium other than a vacuum, their speed will generally be less than c, and thus subject to the specific properties of the medium. Example: the LA smog will probably cause the speed to drop to subsonic, which as we all know, is beatable by any L with simple mods. :-)

Y2K Bolt, the powertrain is the exact same as a non SS Z28. 5.7 liter LS1, 305 HP, 335 lb-ft torque, available with either the 4 speed automatic or 6 speed manual.

This isn't the California Camaro Trooper, but ours looks similar. And I can't speak for the ones out of this state, but I KNOW the ones out here go REAL quick. Much quicker than a stock Z28. The trooper out here cought up to my friend on his "Crotch rocket" and passed him like he was almost standing still.
