Question Truck occasionally won't start

I have only driven my truck about 3 times since I bought it a week ago. However, I went out to start it this morning and it wouldn't start. I only heard a relay click and that's about it. I went out about 10 minutes later and it started. I just checked to see if a chip had been installed, since I bought it used w/ 15k miles and there is nothing plugged into the front of the computer. Actually it's just a hole with a connector. It looks as if there was a chip installed in the past because a see some marks on the rubber around the area where the computer is. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Should the connector on the computer be exposed? Thanks.

Cool

99svtlightning,sounds like your battery may need a charge.also check the terminals on the battery to make sure there tight.it sounds like the previous owner had a chip in the L but i wouldn't think that has anything to do with it. when this happened to me it was in the staging lanes at a dragstrip and was caused by running the heater with the engine turned off.got a jump from some kids that were drooling over the L only minutes before. these chevy kids were impressed to see the L run 12.97 right after getting a jump.they were in there teens so there is still hope for them to return from the darkside[lol] i would rather have my battery die in my driveway than at the strip in front of hundreds of people.later

I checked the battery and it reads a little over 12volts. The truck started up fine about 5 minutes later. Any other ideas? Could it be the factory security system, is there one? Just looking for ideas. I'd hate to be away from home and it happen again. Thanks for all of your help.

Sorry to be of absolutely no help, but I did read once that "if engine turns over and so does car (truck), THEN you have a problem".

Cool

Interesting.

My truck wouldn't start in 20 degree weather recently. I have added a Swanson chip and Pro-M and am very pleased with the added performance this combunation gives me. I suspect that since the truck is probably running leaner, it is harder to start when a richer mixture is required (cold weather). I don't enough about the electronic system to prove this, but I never had problems starting the truck until after the chip/Pro-M swap.

Try using your other spare key, it could be the theft system. See if it happens with that one as well...

99svtlightning:

I have had this problem a couple times as well. It seemed to only happen when i put the key in the ignition and turned it right away. I think it may just be something to do with the security system. If i wait about a half second after putting the key in before turning it, it always cranks right away. Hope thats all it is for you too.

Probably not it but worth checking into - I have seen fairly new batteries show correct voltage and even brightly illuminate the headlamps, but fail to start the car.(solenoid clicking) I've seen this about 4 or 5 times in 20 years of working on cars.

I think an internal short in the battery can cause this - correct voltage, low amperage. Take the battery to AutoZone or wherever and have them do a load test on it. I had a BRAND NEW one do this in my Vette that was 2 days old. Fortunately, I had seen this problem before and it was the first place I tested. And yes, they can all of a sudden start the car and then not.

P.S. If it was chipped before, make sure the wiring harness is correctly installed on the front of the computer. If nothing else, remove and re-attach it just to be sure. Also check to make sure they re-attached the battery cables correctly, because that'll do it too.

No offense but havn't you had a lot of problems with yours in the few days youve owned it?? Im sorry.

1. make sure its totally in park by wiggling the shifter.

2.When the security acts up,It will turn over but wont start.

3.My friend bought a 2000 5.4 sport xlt and when they went in to start it after the detail,It wouldnt,It just turned over and over. They tried everything for 4 hours!!
next day it sarted right up.by the way, they went through about 8 keys trying to fix it the night before.

Wink

Actually this is my first problem, but I have asked a lot of questions. I figured this is the place to ask 'em.
