Question Those running slicks

For those of you using slicks at the drag strip, do you manually shift through the gears? Since the slicks essentially lower your rear gear ratio, how do you get your trucks to shift correctly? Maybe a "special" burn on a chip?

Tell your chip maker that you are, or have changed your tires or gears. They will give you the correct shift points for what ever combo you have. ie: 4.10 with 26 inch slicks, or what ever you have.

You can not do a manual 1-2 upshift, under full throttle. The L will go into the rev limiter before it shifts.

Tire size has nothing to do with transmission shift points. The counter on top of the rear end measures ring gear revs and reports that info to the computer. It is true that 26" slicks with a 3.55 give around a 3.70 actual rear ratio. This seems to be a better combo than the guys that are running 4.10 rears which have an actual ration (with 26" tires) of around 4.33. I say this because they seem to have much more trouble getting traction. I believe the best combo would be the 4.10s with 28" tires. Unfortunately, this combo is not easily or cheaply achieved.

Cool

Noel is right. The transmission shifts on RPM, not speed. The 3.73s I am running along with the MT Street 26X11.5X16 tires give me the 4.10 (+ or - a few percent) ratio that I was looking for. Shift points (rpm wise) can be determined by the chip program.

With an aftermarket chip, my truck shifts much more efficiently (and safer too) than I could ever accomplish manually.

Yeah, we have had our PSP chip re-programed for 3.73 28" (street) one one program and 3.73 26" (strip) on another program. And with the 4way chip you cna change progrma on the fly, and dont have to turn your truck off, or clear the PCM.

I just leave it in drive, and hold on for the ride.... of course, launching at 2k makes it feel even better

Thanks for all the info, guys. I have been wanting to take my '00 to the strip, but I really wanted to get some slicks first. I have stock gears, and did not want to waste my time if the truck shifts incorrectly (too soon, too late, etc).

Cool

eddie,

I have only dropped the rear end 2". I LOVE the way it makes the truck look now. It has a "level" stance. Ride seems less springy than it did before. No bottoming out.
