Lightbulb 351 into L??

I have a street engine that was built for my brothers cobra, it's a 351 that puts out about 400HP to the wheels so not sure what it is at the flywheel. I'm buying a 99 L this week and was wondering if it would be a good idea to drop that 351 into the L and just sell the engine from the L. Im not concerned about warranty or any of that BS, let me know you guys opinion on this matter. BTW those 400ponies are N/A.

Not much point in that! You can easily get 375 RWHP with just a chip & filter. If you're going thru all the hassle, You might want to get an engine with SERIOUS HP. 400 RWHP in a stock L. is only $1,000 away. Lloyd

You may not care about warranty and you may not have emissions requirements where you live (if you do, it certainly will not pass a visual), but I think it would be much more cost effective to get a regular F-150, do the Lightning treatment to it (ground effects, suspension, wheels, interior), and swap you're motor into that. I'm not sure if the 351W motor will mate to the 4R100 trans, so you may lose that too from the stock L.

Basically what you propose would be the same thing as putting a 460 into a Cobra. I just think it would be wiser if you're talking $$ to do something like this to a regular Mustang GT...or in your case a regular F-150.

If it has to be an L, why not a Gen 1 since that came with the 351W to begin with? What a simple swap that would be.

IMHO, doing something this custom will devalue the snot out of the vehicle, so why not build your own from scratch?

I agree with what was said above. And hell, since you already have the engine, and want something to put the 351 in. Why not by a lighter car, and swap the engine?? That I think, would be more interesting and fun then what you propose. Or even if you just want show, and some go. You could always buy an old junker F-100 and swap the engine. Won't have to worry about emisions.

Well if you end up keeping the new Lightning with it's stock motor, would you be interested in selling the built 351? I have a 93 L that it would fit into very nicely

Svtguy84,

Me I would swap it..... the 351W has more go fast stuff than our 'L will ever have. If your engine indeed does produce 400HP at the rear wheels you are 40 to 50 HP better than most of us are. Then add a blower you would be looking at 500+ HP for a lot less money.

On the other hand.... mebbe any older F150 or Fox body would be better

The early versions of the E4OD will bolt to a 351, but I don't know if the computer will react well to it. you're looking at a lot of issues to dothis, and I agree with whomever said it would really hurt the overall value of the truck.

Cool

You might have about the same amount of horsepower but I have a hard time believing you'll get the same amount of wide range torque.
