Post What's up with the Big Mouth Filter?

I just ordered the Airaid system and I see alot of people here swapping a Big mouth filter for the K&N filter. Why?

I did a couple of searches and found the autophysics site and I also saw a couple of references to an "S & B" big mouth filter. Are they different?

Thanks!

Jim

I agree that the filter is open and not closed on the end like the K&N but, that is not the reason for the name Big Mouth. The Power Stack is also an open-ended filter, as is the Quick Change-but you add the hose on for the ram-air effect. I believe the the filters have a difference in the way the air exits the filters.

FYI...

Why do people switch from the K&N to the Big Mouth?

Howard,

check out www.autophysics.com as they explain it pretty well.

Basically, and IMHO, the K&N causes turbulence in the airflow path of and L. With the Mass Air sensor immediately behind the filter, there is a risk of the sensor getting a bad read of the air and thereby sending corrupt data to the PCM and adjusting timing, fuel, etc. The open end drastically reduces, if not eliminates, turbulent air flowing across the mass air sensor.

In essence:

Good read of air = more power.
