Putting the snows back on....
Well I just got done putting the snows on. 3 of the 4 wheels were siezed on the hubs. It took the shop 1, 1/2 hours to get them off. This happened when putting the F1's back on from last winter as well. They F1's were torqued to spec, and I would not expect alluminum to sieze on a steel hub. Is anyone else having this problem when they change their wheels ? If this is "normal" for F-150's then what's the point hauling around a spare tire ? They tried prying them off with a 4 foot pry bar with no luck after letting it sit with penatrating oil for 20 minutes. They had to put a board across the inside of the wheel and use a small hydralic(sp?) jack against the leef spring to break them loose.

Snowplow: How much did you pay for your steel rims? Where did you get them? I'm about to mount my four winter tires and about the best price around here is $175 each for OE steel rims -- too much for me. Hate to mount them on the aluminum rims. Rather save those from the salt.

Snowplow: What's wrong with anti-sieze on the lugs? I've had it on 4 different vehicles I've owned for nearly 200K miles with no problems. The lugs are just as tight as when I torqued them down, and there not a lick of rust on any of the wheel studs. They spin on and off sooo nicely with the 4-way. I'll never put on lug nuts w/o it.

When I took off my Winter Dualers last spring it took me over an hour and a half! I tried everything. Finally I borrowed a 'dead' sledge hammer (head full of lead shot), put it up on a hoist, and beat them off. What a workout!
I got some Permatex Anti-Sieze Compound and smeered the contact surfaces (and the studs). My brother, the Karma Kanix teacher, yelled at me for 'lubricating' the studs. According to him, this allows the 100 foot pounds of torque to pull on the studs harder, risking snapping them off. This is especially true for us '99.5'ers with 12mm studs. 2000+ have 14mm.

Thanks for all the repies guys...
Shifter.. I paid $89.00 Cnd for my OEM 16" steel rims. They are not the nice steel rims that you would normally get on an F-150. They are the old ugly style ones
The nice ones were around $130.00 Cnd. You might even be able to get aftermarket aluminum F-150 rims that are cheaper then the OEM steel rims. I asked and was told there were no aftermarket steel rims available for the F-150.
2000 F150 4x4....DHFerguson, is correct. Never ssieze, greese, or any other lubrucant is fine on the hub, but you should always be carefull to not get it on the studs. I never wanted to take the chance, but I would like to be able to change a flat if necessary and the shop seemed to know what they were doing so I let them.
DHFerguson....That is the method (big sledge)the other shop used last spring to remove the snows and put the F1's back on. The shop I went to this time didn't like that idea as you could damage the tire of rim if you missed
Also if you use lubracant on the studs and they still torqued to spec, it is possible for them to loosen by themselves. A clean dry stud with the nut torqued to spec will never be hard to remove and you will never have to worry about them loosening.

SnowPlow: $89 is a great price, about half what I've been quoted. Plain steel wheels are fine by me. Where was that priced from, if I may ask?

Geeze....
You guys have snows on already?
I wait until I see the first flakes. I don't think that we will be getting a lot this year....but again, I am just hoping!
I got my steel F-150 wheels for 60$ each last year. They all get them from the same wheel supplier in Canada. Using the Bridgestone Winter Duelers in 225 size. I should have gotten the 245's because they are just a bit more stable...oh well.

Did you purchase your winter tires yet? I got my Bridgestone (don't say Firestone) Winter Dualers on Navagator take-off cast wheels last year for ~$650 (US), mounted, balanced and delivered. Go to www.tirerack.com and get a price. Better yet, call them and talk to a 'tire expert'.
A friend just got a similar deal for a similar package for his extended-cab F-150.

Shifter.... I got them through Supirior Tire in 4300 Duffrin St, North York. 416 635 9967.
PBGas.....Yes I have the snows on now. Aurora gets snow sooner then Missasaga or Oakville
I hope we are in for a good (read...lots of snow) winter....I want to go skiing

Just wondering why you guys in snow country don't buy beaters for the winter. When I lived back east I always had one. So nice to see the good car/truck in the garage all clean in the middle of winter. Don't have to worry about someone sliding into ya, and that salt all over everything. Bring the "L" out on nice sunny dry days and show off the wax job!
