(Dealer) Service Shop
Hello all,
I am updating this very shortly, and believe everyone should take a good look at the list. This document will help you, and your service manager figure out what works, and does not work to fix certain issues on the 1999, & 2000 Lightnings.
If anyone has additional problems, or issues with there Lightnings that are "not" listed here, then please add to this topic.

Hello everyone,
I am reviving my post from almost 1 year ago. It "still" seems to be relatively comprehensive. I will be storing my Lightning this week in heated storage. $65 dollars per month!
At any rate the vehicle needs to be stored, and have the insurance cancelled/plates put on hold at the DMV. I will have my oil changed for the first time by the service repair shop at Enfield Ford. I picked up a Ford Motor Craft Filter PT# FL-820S, and 10W-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil. It's been a year since I've posted regarding these issues, so I may be slightly behind in what is "best", but from what I remember the Mobil 1 filters, Motorcraft filters, and Red line filters were of the highest quality, as was their synthetic oils (Mobil 1, and Red Line).
I am having the service shop also look at all "preventative", and manufacturing defects that have not been resolved. As many of you recall I am still sick with Crohn's Disease, and my Lightning # 2153 purchased on July 31st of 1999 still only has 3,000 miles on it to date. I have kept it Zainoed, and maintained, but it has not been driven. The dealership that I have a repertoire with understands my inability to get things taken care of as far as under warranty, and seem to be very supportive of helping me out.
I'll have them look at the "manufacturing" issues mentioned above in my previous post. Things such as the alignment, control arm replacement to SVT spec parts, and #4 coolant leak on the plug. These are but a few of the many things that my dealership watches out for, and said they would keep up with my records. I would like any "recent" problems that have been talked about by you guys in the past year to be appended to this thread for me. I have not been able to read, or keep up at all because of my illness. I've been to busy trying to find a cure.
The good news at this time is I "am" on to a cure. I begin treatment tomorrow, and will hopefully be 100% healthy within the next few months. I look forward to rejoining my fellow Lightning owners, and resuming a "normal" life, without all the pain.
I want to thank those of you that have kept up with me, even when I was not posting here at F150 online. Tundra, & Burninout101. If you guys ever need anything let me know, and if I am capable I've got your backs.
To everyone else who didn't keep up with me, but had me in mind I also thank you, because those prayers, and thoughts are paying off. I "will" cure this illness, and I will re-join my fellow Lightning owners!
Sincerely,
Michael Parent
P.S. Please list any specific problems, or updates that I should be aware of to enable my dealership to assist me. It's very important to me.

Hi Guys,
I read the FAQ, but many problems are not listed, so would it be ok if we could kind of keep this one updated? We could then use this one to update the FAQ. I'm not sure who does the FAQ, but it might be a cool idea. I was here pretty much from the beginning, so I'm an old timer in the world of GEN II lightnings.
This is an explanation for newbies to "hand" to their dealer. Of course this one is written from my perspective, so you may want to alter it slightly to fit your current situation.
Print this out, and bring it to your dealer. It's easier then printing out all the links up above! it tells the dealer the problem, and how to initiate a decent response. Plus it will "forewarn" them on issues, so when you do come crying, they won't be surprised.
1: Alignment (Cam Bolts Request or Upper, and Lower Control Arm Replacement)
Alignment - Upper & Lower control arm replacement (Cam Bolts Request)Connected with (#6) 1 & 6 seem to both be related. I am looking to replace the control arms with parts numbers: XL3Z-3078-BA and XL3Z-3079-BA These are the parts that were supposed to have come on the vehicle from the factor when built, but were "not". SVT verified this, and the parts numbers should be correct.
2: Paint Damage (Hood, Roof, Flare etc.
Paint Damage (Hood, Roof, Flare etc.): My entire truck was repainted with R&M paint. They did an excellent job, but I found some damage on the roof where those two grooves are. The paint is bubbling, and flaking off to expose some type of white primer underneath.
3: Intercooler Leaks
If the intercooler leaks this is the procedure as "known" to fix the problem. Roush & SVT suggested to take off everything on top of the motor, including the heads. Roush & SVT will send over a completely built up assembly (including a new supercharger, intercooler & intake manifold) which would need to be carefully torqued down. Seems Roush thinks flexing may have been causing the coil failures where the leak would occur. Oil and both coolent systems would be flushed. Spark plugs would be replaced and the O2 sensors checked.
4: Loose Ground Effects
Check Ground Effects, and simply tighten them appropriately.
5: Cracked Fog Light Lens
Check Fog Lights. The light covers seem to get extremely hot, and when water splashs up from puddles, or other sources after wet weather, etc.. The covers crack. Should be covered under warranty.
6: Seat Damage
The seats are "not" damaged yet, but I would like to know if they can prevent the problem from getting out of hand with a redesigned version. The current problem stems from a "design fault". The structure of the frame that the foam, and or cushion is overlaid on. If you press down on the bolster area with a hand you will feel a metal rod that runs from front to back about the middle of the bolster. Your outer thigh area will be over this bolster and the rod beneath. I first noticed the material looking slightly dirty, but it was just a depression in the seat where that rod was. As the foam is cut by the rod over time from getting in, and out the seat wears, and becomes uncomfortable to sit on. I would note that both seats (Driver, and Passenger) will more than likely develope the same problem. Even the inside bolster on the drivers seat may be suseptible. I believe Ford is aware of this, and has an arrangement for repair.
7: Coil pack #4 shorting out due to loose heater hose leaking coolant.
This is not a problem as of yet, and he intercooler leak is separate from this coil pack issue. The #4 pack (on the rear left of the engine, facing it) is the one typically that gets leaked on by a hose fitting on the firewall. It is apparently not a significant leak to where you'll notice a loss in the intercooler resevoir, but enough to wet the pack badly enough to cause it to ground out, leaving a green residue that is easily seen, and an engine which won't run correctly.
8: Tranny & Driveshaft Vibration/Leak
Not a problem at this time, but worth checking to prevent damage. Problem begins as a loud buzzing sound at highway speeds, and excessive vibration, caused by having a loose transmission hub. (This part that connects to the driveshaft if loose will cause oil leaks from the tranny. Oil would show up all over the exhaust and driveshaft, and the driveshaft would be flinging the oil over the underside of the truck. To solve this problem unfortunately would require a new transmission and driveshaft; New parts as oppossed to remanufactured,
9: Piston Slap Updates (Possibly Forged Piston Related & not dangerous on warn up!)
Forged Pistons cause a "piston" slap like sound upon warm up on almost all vehicles, however the problem has been known to not subside upon warm up on "some" Lightnings, which then required having the entire motor replaced. Listen carefully to the motor for approximately 5-10 minutes if possible, and accces the situation.
10: 3 Rib Belt Vs 5 Rib
The rear serpentine belt, which drives the alternator, power steering, etc. Must be a 5 Rib belt. I have not checked this, but some Lightnings only have 3 rib belts, and have "broken/snapped" because of this. The wrong part number is associated with the 3 rib belt. I don't have the number for this.
Sincerely,

Hello Guys,
Ok I just got a phone call from Enfield Fords Service Manager.
Here is the list of things they were "supposed" to do when I dropped the vehicle off 1 week ago, and here are the things they did/didn't do.
Ok that is what I asked be taken care of! I don't think it was to much to ask, and here is the response I got at 7AM this morning from the Service Manager
1: "The parts for the alignment are not valid/marked, by SVT under any bulletin. The one's on your vehicle are fine, and there isn't a problem."-Service Manager
I told him to "call" SVT, and to take the vehicle for a short drive. While driving cut the wheel to the left as if you were parking in a spot. This should reproduce the clunk. They said they would simply grease the steering stops. (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)!
2: "There is no roof damage. It's wax build up the Service Manager claims"-Service Manager
Then why is my paint "Bubbling"? (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)
3: "We can't look at the intercooler since a problem is not actually happening yet"-Service Manager
No **** sherlock I'm only at 3,000 miles, so the problem hasn't started, but I wanted them to be aware, and to at least check it. (NOT A GOOD ANSWER) They said they can't waste their technicians time on problems that haven't begun yet. (Hey fine buddy it's yours, and fords dime to waste when damage is done.
4: "The ground effects are fine, and tightened to SVT spec so we didn't touch them."-Service Manager
Then why are they "loose", and ready to fall off? (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)
5: "Fog lights are fine, and we can't cover them even if a problem occurs"-Service Manager
Not a smart answer **** head. I'm not paying a dime for Fords mistake in producing faulty Fog Light covers. They should have been made of Pyrex, not just plain glass, so you will replace them. (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)
6: "There is not seat damage at this time, so we can't help you, and even if there was a problem we can't help cause SVT doesn't have any notification about a problem"-Service Manager
No kidding. Again it's preventative maintenance, and a way to set my mind at ease when, and if a problem does occur. They basically told me it's my problem. (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)
7: "Didn't check the coil pack, since you said it wasn't a problem yet. Again we can't waste our technicians time with problems that aren't happening yet"-Service Manager
Again it's your money, and unfortunately my time your wasting, so at this point I'm getting pissed off (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)
8: "No known problems with the tranny, and since you said it wasn't a problem yet, we didn't look at it"-Service Manager
Ok now I'm getting really pissed. When/if those parts go it's gonna put my lightning out of commission for weeks, and it's going to waste their time, and money. (NOT A GOOD ANSWER)
9: "Ford said there is nothing wrong with these motors. No bulletins, nothing. We checked the motor at start up, and no problems"-Service Manager
Ok I'll give them 1/2 credit here. Ford "does" know about the piston slap, but my motor does not have the problem at this time. (Decent Answer), but I'm taking away points because they "lied".
10: The rear serpentine belt, which drives the alternator, power steering, has 8 ribs, not 3 so you are fine.
Well at least they looked, or "did" they? As far as I know there are either 3 ribs, or 5 ribs. Perhaps another Lightning owner can confirm this, so I "know" this guy is blowing smoke up my ***.
11: You gave us the wrong oil, and we can't change it for you. Mobile 1 Synthetic 10W -30 is what you gave us, and this will void your warranty. We need 5W - 30.
Ok now I'm pissed. I bought oil for nothing, just so these idiots can give me **** about viscosity weights? At this point I am steaming, and I'm taking my business elsewhere. I don't put up with BS like this. They did however rotate my tires, and tell me my front right rims is scratched, and 3 lugs are chipped. How the "HELL" does a vehicle get a scratched rim when I don't even "drive" it. It's been sitting practically since I bought it, and only has 3,000 miles on it.
Ok I'm done ranting, but I would like comments from others on this circumstance, and to tell me what you think about the Service Managers comments?

MB, did the dealer (or yourself) verify the lower control arm part numbers via a sticker or whatever? If you told them what the part numbers should be, I would hope they had enough sense to at least look. Should be easier to inspect while on a lift.
