Cool

Geez, it's kind of tough for me to buy into excessive heat since these particular driving lights have been around for a while.... I just thought it happened around one of the bizzillion construction zones around here. (go M-DOT go)

I lost my first light 2 weeks after I got my truck, bought a replacement from Ford the same day.(in stock, what a coincedence!!) Next stop was to Ramchargers to buy smoke lenses from GTS since I have had geat luck with them and the price was right. ($25/pr)
I use the lights all the time and have not had any problem since. If any one comes up with a concrete problem with the lights, please post.....

Happy New Years everyone!!!!!

Look put on new lens, put covers on them and never, never, never turn them on. Why bother?
Number one the extra light they provide is a joke. If the guy coming the other way is too drunk to see your headlights the fogs aren't gonna make any difference and last all they do is pi$$ off both the people you come at and up behind while doing you no good at all. Leave'em off. They aren't cool they're stupid and at $70 a pop really stupid.

Hey Noelvm,
Thanks for the heads up. I agree that it's BS. I've already notified my dealer that they "will" pay for them if they crack. I've explained myself pretty throughly from the start that the glass is not "resistent" to cooling fast enough. Pyrex type glass should have been used, not just plain glass.

I went out side to look and there it is the drivers side is cracked all over, with no point of impact. I dont have covers and I use the fog lights all the time . The Lincoln Navigator has a plastic lens on there fog lights will that fit? Is the 2001 driving light glass or plastic ?

I can promise you that it is cold water on hot glass.

The other day I went to a coin wash for a quick rinse. My fogs come on with the daytime running lights (after modification). Truck is idling in the bay. Aim nozzle at lights. Pop!! Glass shatters and falls to the ground.

Figure this is going to be hard to prove with no glass in the damn thing so I bought one. (First time I've come across an in-stock Lightning-specific item - Hmmmmm?!?)

$172.00 Canadian - Ouch. Go to install it and notice the other lens is cracked!!!!! Now I'm pi$$ed.

Thumbs up

I have run my fogs during the day for 6 months with just the park lamps on (after modifications) and finally ran into some rain (forgot to shut them off) BINGO!!! 2 SHATTERED LENS. Dealer warranteed them but will probably get old after awhile. Water or cold is the culprit. It's the rapid constriction that does it. The covers only make them retain heat more and could cause breakage. IMHO!

Howdy Guys,
See, now aren't you glad I brought some of these old threads to life. I know I shouldn't have, but at the same time I'm glad I did. My dealer service shop thread is really good, and has a lot of stuff that the FAQ doesn't. I'm going to bring that thread to the top again.

Sincerely,
Metallic "You-Got-Knocked-The-*******-Out" Blue

Are these lamps Lightning specific? They must fit other Ford products. They must be breaking on other vehicles. Doesn't anyone have a solution? Aftermarket? Mine are both broken and now the glass is falling out. I don't want to spend $140 just to have them break again.

There was a source that had parts I believe. There is also someplace that sold them much cheaper....maybe a Mustang supplier in Texas, they ars the same as the late 80s early 90s GT fogs. Anyone remember?

I agree with Black, the 01 lights are better looking all around and that will be what Jeff and I do once they become available. For now, I finally got one of our other dealerships to warranty the broken one on our truck after fighting the service dept at the dealership WHERE I WORK!
They've also ordered new catalytic converters and are promising to fix the "clunk."

Hello Guys,
The best way to cope with this problem is unfortunately to "notify" your dealership "before" the problem occurs. I told my dealership almost 1 year ago to "expect" broken fog lights caused by "Cold water splashing against a "hot" lenses". I told them to specifically test this hypothesis on a light assembly if they felt the need.

Check Fog Lights. The light covers seem to get extremely hot when turned on for awhile, and when water splashes up from puddles, or other sources after wet weather, etc.. The covers crack. Should be covered under warranty if you prepare.
  • If a 1999/2000 Gen II Lightning fog light assembly is turned on, and allowed to heat up, then it will crack upon having cold water, and or fluids make contact with it.

Sincerely,
Metallic "The-Lightning-Scientist" Blue

The fog light on our lightning are the same ones used on 87 to 93 Mustangs. Your can buy them from Mustangs Unlimited{Phone # 1-800-243-7278}. In there catalog page 91 part #65070 for $49.95 each. These replace the orginal part #E7ZZ15200A. With the problem that we have I think ford should replace them under warrenty, but if they don't this information might help.

Cool

I replaced my originals with the Mustang replacements many moons ago and no problems at all. I think my stock Lightning fog lights were defective.
