Post Winter Driving/Snow Tires

Anyone have any comments regarding a good tire that would fit the stock rims and driving the L in the snow in winter? It's getting cold here in Chicago and I either have to switch tires or (ugh) sell the L and get a 4WD truck.

I already had a baeter in my parking spot, so I am trying to drive that. But first, I have to find a set of headers that will work with a Chevy Big Block and that '66 pickup.

I tried looking for such tires, and its gonna cost you. I think Dunlop makes one that's 'studdable.' But I am not sure.

Another Alaskan Lightning owner and myself bought a set of studded snow tires and rims for $800. Just tell them they are for a ford expedition. We had to get 17"ers.

Check out www.tirerack.com and go to the winter tires.
I bought winter duelers last year, I can't say enough about how good they are in the snow. The stock tires suck even if it's just a light dusting of snow. I've never driven anything worse in the snow than the L, but with the duelers it was almost as good as my old full size 4X4 Blazer. The duelers are well worth the few extra bucks ($344 for 4).

Big Bob-

Do a search. there is a LOT of information on winter driving and tires. Me? I got the Winter Dualers from Tire Rack last year and had them mounted on Navagator cast take-off wheels for ~$700. with 500lbs of salt bags in the bed it worked good. Just keep out of the boost!

WARNING

Before you buy the Winter Dueler, look at the following:
http://www.yokohamatire.com/04b3f.html

I have inspected both at my dealer, and the Yokohama is by far the better tire. The pattern is (IMHO) better suited to snow and slush, AND THE COMPOUND IS THE SAME THROUGH-OUT THE TIRE.

I bought some steel 16" rims for a Expy and they work just great.
