Tranny rebuild kits, what the difference?

In a couple of months I will be rebuilding the tranny. I have looked at the kits offered by several vendors including the Monster in a box kit and LFP's kit. They look similar but the Monster in a box is double the price. I am a true believer in the theory that you pay for what you get...most of the time. I only want to do this once and will be throwing in a stall converter at the same time. What is the difference between these 2 kits? Is the monster that much better or is the LFP kit just as good AND a good deal? I need the tranny as a daily driver, stalling @ 2500 and reliable up to about 650 RWHP.

I have searched and found most folks happy with their tranny and yet a few problems with others. Any of you tranny guys familiar with parts advertised in the 2 kits and what the difference may be??

While I don't have a ton of info on the exact components used in each kit, I know Matt V. (SVT150) ran deep in the 10's with the LFP kit and a pro torque converter, while Gregs Monster box/rebuild kit seems to have lost some of it's fans since Jasper has take over rebuild duties and there has been issues he's still a wealth of info and I'm sure could shed some light on the different components used, clutchs, pump, input shaft ect...

Thanks for the input. I was thinking about going with the LFP kit but I am pretty much cluless about the difference in the kits compared to the price. gregg seems very good at what he does and has a big customer base however I was more concerned with quality/price. Since I dont have a money tree yet I would prefer to get the most bang for the buck. Again, thank for the help.

BTS is at the top of the food chain but not all of us have 4K to drop on a tranny, we all know you get what you pay for but if you don't have it there are other options.

Didn't realize they were quit that much but I do agree there are other options, just throwing another out there.

Been there, done that.... Everybody complains about the BTS entry fee but the fact is, if you have to keep yanking out broken cheaper trannys, you'll easily surpass the $4000 mark and still not have as good a tranny as a BTS. Why not bite the bullet and buy the "real deal" tranny and forget about having to do it over and over with the cheaper "roll the dice" trannys. Just my 2¢.

Dealer Jim, I also agree with you, I was guessing about 750.00-1000.00 for a rebuild kit, another 750.00-800.00 for a converter and 1000.00 to 1300.00 for labor to put it all together, so thats what 2500.00-2700.00, the BTS is 3800.00 plus another 500.00 in labor but it's the best, one rebuild on the cheaper setup and it's even money plus more BS.

That was my decision. Do it right the first time and have a 2 year unlimited warranty.
