muffler info. and muffler help
I noticed the following posts by Aford on another board regarding mufflers.
I called and talked to AFord and he does know his exhaust systems. Not only is he the owner of the muffler shop but he has been in business for over 40 years, testing, dynoing [spelling?] all kind of performance machines and their exhaust systems.
He also owned a 99L, 2000L and now has a deposit on the 2001. The man knows the Lightnings.
I tend to trust his information regarding the Magnaflow's L performance vs. Flowmasters lack of performance. He mentioned that with the Magnaflows, I will see a HP increase.
Does anyone know anything about the Magnaflows and their performance in regards to the L’s???
Flowmaster mufflers are very restricted. Stop using them! You are losing power, they sound good, but that is all.
My opinion is supported. I run an exhaust shop. I install mufflers on performance vehicles every single day : on Lightnings, vipers, corvettes, and mustangs. Flowmaster sounds good on mustangs and GM products. Put a Magnaflow #12569 on a Lightning and watch it go. Been doing this 47 years. Had a 99 lightning and now a 00. Not trying to stir up trouble, just trying to help out.
a #12569 magnaflow muff has cross flow design and is straight thru. A flowmaster changes flow direction 3 times and creates a harmonic vibration in your ears. A 3 in out pipe helps make a more mellow sound, not a hot rod on lightning trucks. flowmaster is the best sound on v8 mustangs, but really the best power. our shop has dyno checked several kinds of exhaust.

I just checked out their website. Interesting. I've never thought twice about our exhaust because everybody said no gains, but the recent exhaust rattle has me looking. Will the 12569 fit directly on our trucks, or will we need to go cat back, or ????

I talked to a couple of the Magnaflow (Carsound) guys as they were going to use my truck for a Lightning system. I don't know if that part # is the same one they were talking about (if it's a dual in/out it probably is) but they did dyno runs on a Lightning with one of their mufflers and found a slight increase in torque but no increase in HP, their plan was to create a custom dual muffler system with x-pipe but I don't know if it ever happened. One of the members of this board was the guinea pig for the dual in/out Magnaflow muffler and I believe he said he wasn't happy with the sound of it.
Jim you should check out my exhaust setup some time I can't really make out all Aford was saying in the quote but I think the dual Flowmasters sound perfect.
I never tried the Magnaflows but I did try the Dynomax race mufflers (also straight through design) and the sound was too high pitched for my taste. Also I was told by my muffler guy that straight through packed mufflers can be deceiving and aren't always the best choice.
Dynomax straight through design:

From what I was told by AFord, the sound is only a little deeper and louder than stock. The difference is suppose to be in the performance gain not the sound.
Sorry about AFord's quotes. I took them out of three posts.
AFord also said the #12569 is a 2 1/2" IN and a 3" OUT. It will bolt in place with what we have. If one adds a 3 1/2 tips, it will give a deeper sound.
I was also told that AFord will get back to us regarding before and after dyno info. for the installation of the Magnaflows

Would like to hear your L!! This Saturday or Sunday??????

Jim you can't hear it because my own truck thinks I'm a thief! I need to have it towed to Macpherson Ford in the Tustin Auto Center they will probably have to reprogram everything and I will probably end up with a CUX2 program.
Will probably have a Swanson flip chip for a 99 Lightning for sale soon.

I'm running a Magnaflow 12568 2 1/2" dual in and 2 1/2" dual out. It cost me $180 installed including tax. It sounds great and I did run faster times somewhere between .075 and .1 on average. The X-pipe is built in.
I've got a Flowmaster in my garage you can have.

A friend of mine just swapped from Flowmasters to Magnaflows on his 98 Cobra. He really likes the sound of the Magnaflows but has not got it to the Dyno to check hp yet

AFord recommended the 12569. This model has 3" out which gives a deeper sound.

I haven't mentioned the Ravens to him yet. I will get his thoughts.

Fordsales,
It already has a deep sound and got to keep the stock tips which was cheaper.
It sounds like a good idea though. They just gave me the best muffler to match what I had.

Jim - I've got the Magnaflow on mine and love it. Had it installed at about 1000 miles if I remeber correctly. Nice mellow sound, not excessively loud. This is a very free flowing muffler that has an x-pipe built in. Between the Magnaflow and the Airaid I get plenty of boost. I can't say that just adding the Magnaflow helped the performance but I can say that I haven't noticed any loss of performance either.
