syclone/typhoon thread
So now instead of one stupid thread we have 2!!! WOW... that was a great idea..
err... and now I'm part of the problem instead of part of the solution by ignoring the ignorance..

This thread has made me verclept, so i'll give you a topic to discuss amongst yourselves:
"if we do have to resort to a ruler to settle this brand war, and we declare Jason Browns' 7sec lightning as the "John Holmes" of lightnings, can we let One Bad D*ck declare himself, the Ron Jeremy of dakotas?

I didn't get a chance to repond to the last thread. I certainly wasn't the one who responded with personal attacks.
I like to have a trailer available when I spray out of the hole. The majority of time I just drive there on sportsman pros and bracket race on motor to a low 12. I too have overdrive.
I have to take issue with you on making an RT faster with $5000 in mods. In fact, MTI in Houston has done it on motor alone. The same way I did it.
Ported stock heads=$1400
M1 intake(already drilled for EFI from Mopar)=$260
Bored t body=$150
cam=$260
Exhaust=$800
Converter=$500
short belt=$10(not needed but it's 10hp)
Dot rear tires(not ET streets)=$320
Injectors=$240(thankyou Ford motorsport
)
Total=$3940-enough for installation if you want to get picky and maybe even some N2O. MUHAHAHAH. But I wouldn't need it.
This combo without shortbelt made 340 rearHP and 400 in TQ. Remember, that's on a lighter truck.
The tire mod is fair. The debate was $5000 in mods. I'm picking the mods. You guys have steam rollers for tires anyway. This combo will run solidly into the 13s on motor on a RT, high 12s on a lighter gen 1 dakota.

That is the most incredibly stupid p!ssing contest I have ever witnessed on the net. Why don't we all just whip'em out and get a ruler? (no offense to the ladies)
Seriously, it's alot of fun reading the Dakota lies and how the Syclones are scared of a 30 punch. ROFLMAO

Hey Tom,
Thanks for responding to my post re: $5k in mods on an R/T.
I was assuming someone would bolt a blower on as one of the first mods, since that's what I've seen from many of the R/T clan. The guy who thinks a blower alone (8psi or whatever) will get an R/T into the 13s is dead wrong. At least not at my home track...where I'm comparing a stock L to a blown R/T. The L is 1/2 sec faster...period. And I didn't think an additional $1500 would get them anywhere really. Heck, exhaust (800) and injectors (240) eats up most of that.
But, if it can be done with just heads, cam, intake, exhaust and a converter, that's cool.
Quick ?... I don't see any mention of a new or recalibrated MAF. Do the new R/Ts run on speed density computers? Also, are the _new_ ones claiming they don't need to tweak the computer to get the truck to run correctly (both performance-wise and driveability?). I can't really count your '92 in this b/c like you I have an older car that is much more friendly to tune than the newer ones. I'd expect a new R/T to need at least a chip and some dyno-tuning time. To be fair that needs to be factored in.
Also, is no rear gear swap needed? I am not that familiar with them, but I would think this might be a common (necessary?) mod as well.
Thanks for the discussion. I'm just a hot-rodder at heart, so learning about different combos interests me.
So what does your truck run on the laughing gas and how much does it weigh?

A lot of guys on this board think I'm some diehard Chrylser fan. The reality is I got most of my experience with 5.0L mustangs. LOL
IMO, a blower is just not the way to go for Dakotas. The computer is still of the speed density style. Most guys add the Mopar computer which adds a ton of timing and blow headgaskets. I used to run 10#s of Vortech on my 318 to a tune of 12.5@108. I sold it ported my heads,changed the intake and cam and put a 150 shot on it and ran 11.5@118. The guys who run blowers really need custom tuning on the dyno. There are only a couple of shops that would do this. The computer does have much more tolerance than say a 87 5.0L.
My 360 cam out of a Ram. I put some new slugs and rods in it with my old top end. This combo will run high 10s@125 on the same N2O. I could run more juice, but I want the 2 bolt block to live as long as possible.It weighs 3500lbs without driver. Most guys just don't think these things can run. You wouldn't believe the reponses I get from people at the track. The tech guys just wave me on through.
Then I get the boot. My combo is nothing exotic, just old fashion hotrodding. I can't even get an aftermarket head or long tube header!! Shesh! The motor is horribly choked up from the factory. You just gotta uncork it.

one bad dakota, you have an awesome hotrod and should be proud of it. Is your truck a "lighter gen 1 Dakota" or an R/T?
My slam on Dakota's should have been directed instead at certain R/T's and their owners.
I own a Lightning because it was a bargain at $27,289, I like the look, and I wanted a factory warranteed truck that could run 13's.
Those are all personal choices and I have no disrespect for the choices others make, just got tired of certain R/T owners.
This is not directed at you, but I find it amusing that some R/T and syclone/typhoon owners feel compelled to post relentlessly to the this L forum. Peace.

You guys are killin me. Here is my take.
Stock: Syclone, Lightning, Typhoon - R/T
They Ty and R/T are probably close stock could probably go either way.
Once you modify them then anything goes, you have lost all basis for comparison.
Dont know why this is such a big deal.

Theres always going to be someone faster. Even with a stock vechile, it comes down to how the motor was broken in,driver,conditions there some much to consider here. But there will always be pissing matchs or see who has the longest johnson contest, You run what you bring, Right? Honestly Who gives a rats ***, they way I look at it there were very nice and impressiv emachines with alot of potentual, and how far you take it is up to you, Racing cost money how fast do you want to go?

The Ty and R/T are nowhere near close. Having owned both a Lightning and a Ty, I can say that they are a good matchup, and could go either way. The Typhoon I had ran a 13.58 when it was totally stock. That's as good as the quickest stock Lightnings manage, and quicker than a stock R/T by a ton. The only difference between a Syclone and Typhoon is 300 pounds.
