Recreational land use petition--everyone please read
Even though this is off topic for a Lightning, I know all of you probably do not want all the land closed to any and all off road activity. The Sierra Club (an extreme radical environmentalist group) is on a total mission to shut down all public land use in America. They just hit a major milestone and succeeded at shutting down the Glamis Sand Dunes in California, because a shrub exists there. They are actively trying to shut everythng down. Now I know all of you are not off roaders, but if they keep pushing they will succeed at eventually shuting down activities that you may like ( such as bicycling, fishing, hiking, etc). Long and short of it, please go to this site and if you feel appropriate please submit your vote against the snowmobile closure in Yellowstone National Park. Sorry for long post and tying up everyones time on a non Lightning topic.

I've been a snowmobiler for 10 years and know about the situation. I've already sent letters to my respective politicians expressing my concerns regarding these issues. These butter-fly lovers need to be hung by there toe-nails. I have complete faith that the American people will stand and fight against the rediculous bans!
Glad to see there are other people who care about these issues.

Another thing for people to do is to join the oganizations that matter to you. Such as the NRA, Snowmobile associations in your states and other groups that hold the same values as you do. If you want to make a difference, these and other organizations need your funds to help them in their battles with the enemy. Most of the membership dues are about the same cost as a magazine subscription. NOW is the time to act. There's only a few days left until it will ALL be decided.
Peter B - I understand exactly what you are talking about. We have a similar problem here in Florida. There are many small islands just off shore of the Clearwater area in the Gulf of Mexico and in the inter-coastal waterways that the local boaters have been using for years. The damn bird lovers have managed to get many of them closed because the birds live there. The birds have always been there and the boaters have been going there for a long time. Some of the locals have been going for over 30 years. I keep my "letters of concern" handy and email them to my representatives on a regular basis.

OTOH, I have seen the irreparable damage that off-roaders do when they act irresponsibly.
Bikes can turn a trail into a rutted, eroded mess in no time. And some people like to spend quiet time in the outdoors without the screaming, smoky stench of two-stroke engines.
What we really need is a balanced approach that considers both the rights of sportsmen and the need to conserve and preserve the enjoyment of our natural resources.
It is simplistic to cast this as a Republican v. Democratic thing. There are idiots on both sides of the aisle, and on both sides of the handlebars.

Good call Gordon.
Although I have never off Roaded (my Saleen, Mark VII LSC, and Saleen were never quite up to the task), I would love to do it someday. But I can understand the concern about destroying the land carelessly. Some people just don't pay attention to the tread lightly philosophy...and that can take away the fun for everyone else.
Gordon was right on...some middle ground needs to be reached.
