Arrow Need radar detector help & info.

First off I have read every FAQ on this sublect, talked to a lot of L owners and even seen Kobiashi's installed Valentine. I was ready to order from Valentine today when the follow info. was e-mailed me by RadarTest.

We tested the V1, the 980 and ten other models last month and found the 980 and the Escort 8500 far superior to the V1, not to mention over $100 cheaper. Check back for a full review of all these units next month.

RadarTest.com
After their e-mail, I was a little caught off guard. From everything I had read, it looked like the Valentine but now this note. Is anyone using the above mentioned systems? If so, can you elaborate a little????

Oh, what to do. Life is getting too complicated with sooo many different mods out there!

Jim,
I think the Valentine is great if you have the money to spend.
I bought the Bell 870 after doing research and it's in the top five, talks and only cost $89.00 (Amazon.com). The only thing it doesn't do is tell the direction the signal is coming from. An option not worth the difference of money to me.

Not only is the direction important but the number of signals. Clever officers will set up in an area that has signals from other sources. One gets use to the alarm going off in a particular area and become complacent...bingo...traffic school, points, fines or you call The Ticket Clinic. I'm not sure if other units have those features. Anyone is better than none...Ken

I have a V1 and am very happy with it but wanted to mention that i saw a Passport version that had remmote detectors at a stereo store the other day. If I had it to do over again I would have hardwired a detector with remote front and rear sensors. The one I saw had a small disply you could put in a number of places.

The Passport SR-1 is nice... but it's supposedly a $1000! (radartest.com). And Bel has a remote model, the 915.

But I read a couple reviews which stated that radar sensitivity from the rear is not as good using a remote model... I guess they dont offer rear radar modules (only rear laser modules).

I have had a Bel 980 (two actually) since they came out last year. I have been totally satisfied with it's performance and was grateful for the price in comparison to the V1. The sensitivity and the discrimination of the Bel 980 is top notch, and it has saved my butt more times that I care to recount here. There have been a few times when I would have liked to know the direction of the source(s), but not $200 worth more than what I paid for Bel.

I have nothing bad to say about the Valentine except it's price.

My own .02 worth....

From my point of view if it doesn't tell you how many signals it's not worth having. Cops hide in areas that cause detectors to go off. All they need to do is set up shop under the cover of a normally false alarm and you are toast. They use those little radar trailers that tells you your speed around here. They set it up and leave it for a few days After you get used to having your detector go off they put a car running radar next to it and once again you are toast if you don't see the additional signal.

The V1 is expensive, but like most things in life you get what you pay for.

Escort used to also have a detector that did multiple signals, don't know if it still does.

K40 has a remote hidden mount front/rear system. They're MSRP is $1187 for the "Sonar-radar" model (multi-signal directional), but cost is $407 tagged, so you can probably work it down to $600-650 installed at a car shop. Their "laser difuser" which is listed at like $299 or something cost is only $107... just some info to use when you're haggling.

I currently have a Bell 745sti, upgraded from a 645sti...they used to work great, but they're showing their age now (4 years I think?). I have always had power-cord problems with them though (thats why the 645 got replaced with the 745).

I was considering the V1 or K40 because I want direction and number of signals... I'll have to go see if the 980 does that these days.

Buy the V1..it is well worth the money..I have owned one for 5 yrs now without a ticket in 10yrs..and have used Mike Valentines detectors before this(passport). I cant tell you the amount of times i have been on I-75 and had radar creeping up from behind..with a little acceleration you can keep him far enough back to be out of range..this is so much fun.what other detector can you do this with??.besides Valentine also makes radar guns so who else would know the workings of radar best..

Chris

ps..anyone know where to get info on a jammer..not that junk phazer ..a real active jammer..there used to be one that required assembly..like putting 2 screws in..that made it legal for sale?? seeya

I read a long report on Jammers. For a jammer to work it has to transmit which is illegal without a permit from the feds and they are not about to issue a permit for jamming. All but one jammer was worthless and the one that worked received a ceast and dissist order from the feds to quit making or selling their product.

With an active jammer, remember your radar "detector" would be kinda useless as you're sending out a radar signal yourself.
